My Recollections of “Mr Maryland” the late Jack Heise

I always knew who Jack was, in fact it was impossible not to if you were a regular attendee of Maryland events as I have been for decades. But only after I started the show 3 years ago did I have the chance and honor to occasionally  talk with the Maryland legend.  I first began to realize what a fixture he was among the coaches and athletic staff as he was always behind the scenes. I went to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta jack was there, the Gator bowl–Jack was there, Buffalo for the NCAA’s –Jack was there, Kansas City last year–Jack was there.  EVERYWHERE there was any important Terrapin game Jack was always present. Last year Gary appeared at a dinner the fastbreakers were having and when Jack walked in a few minutes late, Gary jokingly responded “Jack you are late where have you been?” Almost every coach–Gary, Brenda, Missy, Ralph ,etc. was close with Jack. and Jack  Heise was proud of the relationships he had created. At Duke where it is literally barely safe to be near the floor and the Cameron Crazies, there was Jack rooting his heart out. I was in Kansas City and after Maryland crushed Cal, Jack was ecstatic. We were in the press area after the game when he was going on and on about what a great job Gary had done with this team. He asked me what I ws going to talk about when I went on the air later that day and had several ideas. It was such a pleasure to be in his presence. Several times over the past few basketball seasons, I would have a chance to talk with him before the games as he often arrived early and Jack was would always be so optimistic.  The final and most lasting impression was the tribute Missy Meharg paid to him during her acceptance speech last Friday night at he Hall of Fame dinner. She spoke of how Jack was a regular attendee of her team’s Field Hockey games and would always send her a letter of his impressions of the team’s performance. Missy’s teams have won NCAA Titles 3 of the last 4 years but seemed to love the fact that Jack had such love for the team.  I will miss Jack, everyone associated with Maryland will, he was one of a kind, he will always be “Mr Maryland.”

If there are any special Jack Heise stories you would like for me to see and possibly relate on the air please email them to me at bposner7@gmail.com.
