Strengths:
Upshaw has very long arms and a huge frame and very big feet. He has solid timing on the defensive end and is a very potent shot blocker. Although he doesn’t run very fluidly, just yet, he does can fill the lane and catch the lob for the big dunk. Offensively in the half court set he has a tremendous shooting touch and can regularly knock down jumpers out to 19-feet. In addition, he is very active around the basket as he gets most of his points off of tip-ins and dunks.
Weaknesses:
Although he is getting more mobile, Upshaw is still fairly getting used to his huge frame. He doesn’t have much lift and he is very mechanical around the basket. He has to gather himself while finishing which allows smaller defenders to take the ball from him or block his shot. With his back to the basket he needs to develop a strong go-to move as well as a counter move to utilize his great size. In addition, he needs to do a better job with his fundamentals (foot work and keeping the ball high).
Bottom line:
Upshaw is still growing and may end up a legit 7-footer. He plays with great heart and it appears he has the inner desire to be a player. Like most bigs he still getting used to his body and will need time to develop, but that shouldn’t stop him from gathering high-major interest. If he continues to develop his skills and evolve as a player he should end up at the high-major level.
