On the strength of a solid fall, Maryland ranks third in the current Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings which were released Thursday.
The Terps have 228 points. Stanford leads the way with 260 and North Carolina is second (254). Maryland’s ranking was bolstered by winning the field hockey national championship and placing ninth in both men’s and women’s soccer. The ACC has five institutions in the top 10. Duke is sixth and Boston College is ninth.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports — 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
