My Take on Danny’s Rumored Transfer

For the time being Danny O’Brien is still a Terp.  I can’t understand how anyone in the media could say that the transfer was going to happen and then it didnt!! Now a maelstrom has been created and Danny is somewhat backed into a corner. From the second the rumors started, I really could not believe it was happening. I talked with Danny last Wednesday at the recruiting celebration and as usual he was upbeat, anxious to host Stefon Diggs that weekend, and looking forward to working with Locksley.

Danny is a great kid and has represented Maryland and Terrapin nation in a great fashion. But here’s my take on his potential transfer and I hope he reads this. The grass might seem greener somewhere else but I doubt that it is. Yes Danny will have to compete with CJ for the starting  job but anywhere he goes the same is true. Danny is the man here and his chances of starting at Maryland in his last 2 seasons are excellent in my opinion.

Some look at Russell Wilson and say this could happen to Danny. Well maybe it could but at Vanderbilt or Delaware? Joe Flacco was one of a kind but what I believe what the Ravens loved most about him was his incredibly powerful arm not his body of work. Vanderbilt? 6-6—No guarantee to start –these are steps backward.

Danny is in the business school, has worked for Under Armour, and has a tremendously bright future in or out of football. I am sure he is being tugged 100 ways but Danny sit back and relax, there is no urgency to the decision. You were born to be a Terp.

We will never know if all the turmoil has had an effect on the decision of Stefon Diggs. Friday night we will find out. But if Danny winds up staying at Maryland and Diggs goes elsewhere, the rumor sensationalists will have done damage to my beloved Terps.

opinions..opinions..opinions..the first thing danny should do is stop listening to other people’s opinion on what he should do. if he feels he isn’t comfortable with mike locksley as the new offensive coordinator or if he feels the problems run deeper in the program than just the o.c. transferring has to be an option, particularly if he has a desire to make the nfl. if locksley runs a similar pro style spread offense like md had last year he should pack his bags and get out of dodge. danny is not a running q.b. danny is not an option q.b. danny is a drop back play action q.b. if danny has not obtain his degree and transfers he would have to sit out one yearand he may only have only one year of eligibility because he already red shirted though i am not sure of how the eligibility of a red shirt transfer is under normal circumstances. i think a player has 4 years of eligibility within a 5 year peroid. if he has his degree he can transfer to another program that has a graduate program that md doesn’t offer and play next year. but the bigger picture is danny’s long term future. not every college qb becomes a pro. very very few do. if danny is happy academically at md he might want to stay because of the many business connections he has/or will have when he matriculates. he can suck it up, play ball at md and if the opportunity arises for the nfl..give it a shot. danny is no lock to being a pro q.b. danny is not the most athletic guy and doesn’t possess the strongest arm. he is smart and works extremely hard. the question might be..does danny think there is too much turmoil with the football program and does he see it continuing or subsiding. the reality is if danny stays..great..if he transfers..fine. the football program will still go on. it’s not like he would be leaving a team that won 10 games last year and is set up for a bcs bowl game this year. md lost 10 games last year and lost 10 games in 2009. we ain’t no football power. md has lost several players and only a few of the incoming freshman will really contribute this upcoming season. so after losing 10 games last year what type of team will surround the qb this year? not an easy decision for danny but we are not talking life or death either. it’s football. i hope he stays.
