Rob Pannell and Katie Schwarzmann Capture Tewaaraton Awards

Rob Pannell of Cornell and Katie Schwarzmann of Maryland were named winners of the 2013 Tewaaraton Award, presented to the top players in men’s and women’s collegiate lacrosse, at ceremonies Thursday at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

The winners are chosen by selection committees, comprised of 12 men’s and 10 women’s current and former college coaches, that are appointed by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Players are nominated by coaches from all three NCAA divisions during the season. The nominees are then screened by the respective committees. FIve finalists of each gender are then selected by the committees after the end of the season.

Pannell recorded a career-best 102 points on 47 goals and 55 assists in his senior season while leading the Big Red to the NCAA semifinals.

He concluded his career with an NCAA Division I-record 354 total points, surpassing the previous of 353 held by 2007 Tewaaraton winner Matt Danowski of Duke. Pannell is the second Cornell player to win the award, joining Max Seibald in 2009.

Along with Pannell, the men’s finalists were North Carolina senior attackman Marcus Holman, Syracuse senior midfielder JoJo Marasco, Princeton junior midfielder Tom Schreiber and Albany sophomore Lyle Thompson. Thompson, a member of the Onandoga Nation, is the first Native American finalist for the Tewaaraton.

Schwarzmann, a senior midfielder who also won the award in 2012, led the Terrapins to an undefeated regular season and a spot in the NCAA championship game. She notched 58 goals and 27 assists for the year while also collecting a team-high 39 ground balls.

She finishes her career third all-time at Maryland in goals (228) and total points (304). She is the third repeat Tewaaraton winner joining a pair of Northwestern standouts, Kristen Kjellman (2006-07) and Hannah Nielsen (2008-09).

Along with Schwartzmann, the women’s finalists were Maryland senior attacker Alex Aust, North Carolina senior midfielder Kara Cannizzarro, Syracuse junior attacker Alyssa Murray and Florida senior goalie Mikey Meagher.
