Attackman Drew Westervelt scored a career-high eight goals to lead an impressive offensive showing as the Chesapeake Bayhawks blew out the New York Lizards, 21-8, in the first Major League Lacrosse game at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island, N.Y.
Attackman John Grant Jr. scored four times for Chesapeake (4-2), which ended a two-game losing streak. Grant scored twice in spectacular style with a quick-flip, over-the-shoulder goal and a low, underhand shot after faking a behind-the-back pass.
Goalkeeper Kip Turner (Severn) made 15 saves to anchor a suffocating defensive effort for Chesapeake, which limited New York to two goals over the second and third quarters. Barney Ehrmann gobbled up six ground balls while fellow long-stick defensive midfielder Jesse Bernhardt scooped five grounders as the Bayhawks finished with a 36-26 advantage in that category. Bernhardt, the team’s 2013 first-round draft choice out of Maryland, was making his Bayhawks debut.
