Bino Does Terrific Job To Help Land Trayvon Reed —from terrapin times.com

Four-star center Trayvon Reed didn’t even need all 48 hours of his official campus visit to College Park this week to come to his college decision — nor did he meet a single Terps basketball player on the trip.

He was just that sold on Maryland and the staff, and how they can further develop him as a post player and a student, so he ended his recruiting Aug. 22, just some 24 hours after being on campus, with his pledge.

Reed, who arrived Aug. 21 and was en route to the airport at lunchtime when Terrapin Times caught up with him, boosted Maryland’s top-3 national class even higher, adding the coveted “rim protector” they sought as perhaps the final piece to the heralded 2014 class.

“Just talking to the coaches, they talked of a bunch of great stuff of how they can help me out academically and on the court. So that I just felt it was a great fit for me, so I went ahead and made my decision,” said Reed, who committed late morning before heading home to Georgia.

“It’s over with, it’s over with now,” he said of the recruiting process, which included only the one official visit. “It was just being my [high] school, this year’s a long year ahead of me, so I made my decision early based off that. I was going to do it later but decided to do it early.”

It took an extra six days after he first attempted to pledge, but the Snellville (Ga.) Shiloh four-star center Reed is finally a Terp. The 7-foot-1, 210-pound big man, who starts his senior year Aug. 26, toured campus, loved the facilities at Comcast Center and took in a football practice.

But most of all he appreciated the personal touch he got from the staff, led by recruiter Bino Ranson, who has been on him for a year-and-a-half, right down to the UMD training staff. He was accompanied on the visit by his stepfather. Both sides wanted him to visit campus first before making a pledge.

“You know, what impressed me was the staff, and like the strength coach, who told me a lot about how my height, how body operates,” Reed said. “And he was telling me about my feet, my growth plates, how I can get bigger. And that’s the main thing for me, to get bigger and stronger in the situation I am in.

“And Coach Bino, he has been on me a while now, and he has been telling me how they can make me a better player and mostly focused on my academics and stuff like that. I have a great relationship with him. And Coach [Mark] Turgeon is a great coach, and he is going to push you to what you are trying to do.”
