BREAKING NEWS: Faust, Peters, and Shaq Granted Releases from Maryland Basketball

Certainly this will be a major topic of disussion on Terp Talk Wednesday night. The second the news got out, I was besieged with inquiries as to what’s going on. Look the landscape of college sports has changed. When a kid is unhappy, he leaves. It’s not just at Maryland where this happens. It seems like the cavalry is arriving next year. Melo Trimble is sure to be a major contributor. Trayvon Reed and now Michal Cekovsky, each could play a major role with the squad.  With Seth Allen, Dez, Jake, Smotrycz and Mitchell returning  my advice is to relax and watch this team develop. There is still room for a transfer or possibly 2.  The names will be out there. It’s just an unusual day at College Park.

Here is the release from the Athletic Department:

University of Maryland men’s basketball head coach Mark Turgeon announced today thatShaquille CleareNick Faust and Roddy Peters have been granted permission to transfer.

“I really enjoyed coaching Nick, Shaq and Roddy,” Turgeon said. “It is unfortunate that they will no longer be a part of the program. I wish them the very best in their future endeavors.”

Cleare averaged 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game as a sophomore. In 69 career games (28 starts), he averaged 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds for the Terps.

Faust started 13 games in 32 appearances last season, averaging 9.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists. In 102 games (66 starts), he averaged 9.3 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Peters appeared in all 32 games during the 2013-14 season, averaging 4.1 points and 2.1 assists in 15.1 minutes per game.

Bruce, (feel free to respond privately) Do you think that these guys were overrated coming out of HS, or are we facing the reality that Mark recruits great, but doesn’t develop his players? When Shaq and Mitchell committed, they were touted to be awesome forces. They have been anything but. At the start of this year, with our veterans and the incoming freshmen, we should have been a force in the ACC and a shoo-in for the NCAAs. Mark sure seems passionate and was pretty successful in the past. Did his guys just not work hard, embrace the team concept, play with passion, or what? I know we have a great 2014 class, but how many more top recruits are going to come to MD if the Terps continue to underachieve?
