It’s nights like last night at the National Museum of the American Indian that make what I do so much fun. It was a tremendously emotional night with the Tewaaraton Foundation honoring Jimmy Lewis, the great Navy attackman from the 60’s and a tremendously decorated jet pilot. The Foundation also honored the late Brendan Looney, also of the Naval Academy who died while on duty in Afghanistan. Brendan was a Navy seal and an emotional Richie Meade, former Navy Head coach just gave a tremendous tribute speech recalling his days with Brendan.
Let’s start with Taylor Cummings. If you are a regular reader of the site, you will recall that Taylor was my pick because of the way she played every facet of the field. Her performance Championship weekend earned her the MOP award. She is a very special player who is so humble and a tremendously unselfish . Taylor is the first sophomore ever selected as the female winner. Maryland had a strong contingent of players and fans there who erupted when the announcement was made.
The big story of the day was the committee’s unanimous decision to have the Men’s Award shared by the two most prolific scorers ever for one season and that of course is the Thompson brothers, Lyle and Miles who played together for Albany. The brothers were dressed in their Native American clothing and continually referred to the lacrosse being the Creator’s game. It was just an incredible experience one that Taylor Cummings will never forget having her picture with the Thompsons snapped by hundreds of media.
