#1 Terrapin Field Hockey Holds on to 3-2 Victory over #10 UMass

The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team beat 10th-ranked Massachusetts, 3-2, Friday in its season opener at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa.

Juniors Anna Dessoye, Alyssa Parker and Shari Jones scored for the Terrapins, who won their 18th straight season opener, dating back to 1997.

“We’re very pleased with the outcome,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “It was great to be under a lot of pressure from a very athletic UMass team. They’re very well-coached by (former Terrapin) Carla Tagliente and opportunistic. We were exceedingly brilliant at times. Taking 25 shots should see a team winning. We need to execute more on them, but I give credit to UMass goalkeeper Sam Carlino. She had 12 saves and played a great game. It’s nice to get an opener under our belt. Nine months we’ve been working to be in this position.”
