5,000 Watch Men’s Soccer Hold on to a 3-2 Victory

Fueled by a crowd of nearly 5,000, the No. 2 Maryland men’s soccer team topped No. 17 Coastal Carolina 3-2 in the home opener Monday night at Ludwig Field.

After being shut out for the first time in nearly three years against No. 14 Louisville Friday, the Terps found the back of the net a mere eight minutes into the match, courtesy of Terrapin captain Dan Metzger. Metzger, a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree and a Soccer America Preseason All-American, connected with a Mael Corboz corner kick to give Maryland (1-0) the early advantage.

“That was a great win tonight against a national contender in Coastal,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I’m proud of our team because we came off a tough loss at Louisville on Friday and came out tonight very determined. I thought we had moments where we played very well in the game and scored some nice goals. I have to credit Coastal because I thought we played well defensively and they still scored two goals.”
