Terps 38 Iowa 31—Terps Move to 5-2 Overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten

The team showed a ton of character today. When CJ went down in the 3rd quarter, the entire defense rose and withheld the Hawkeyes from scoring.

A look at the many pros  from today:

Will Likely–another big play —- the pick six

The defensive line (especially, Andre Monroe and Darius Kilgo) had its best game of the year.

Stefon 9 catches 130 yds–1 TD –says it all

Great sideline catch by Coach Edsall in the 4th quarter

Great Crowd of 48,000 plus–that also stayed til the end

Coach Edsall –Post game

“I’m just so proud of these kids. In terms of how they conduct themselves, how they handle themselves, how they just never say die and keep fighting, keep battling when we have some of our self-induced things out there on the field. That was a great win today against a very fine football team. The thing that I was very impressed with is the fact that we did it as a team. All three phases contributed and did their end. A bunch of guys stepped up that maybe haven’t been playing a whole bunch and it just seems like this group really grasped that team concept, that team pride and they love each other. They want to play hard for each other, they want to do it for each other; and when you have that, you get the results that you got today.”

Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz

“It’s a disappointing loss for our football team, but congratulate Maryland. They are a veteran team and well coached. Today wasn’t much fun for us but we got what we deserved. We’ll go back home and see if we can play better next time we’re on the football field.”

“I don’t want to diminish what they [Maryland] did. They did a great job, they deserve to win, they out played us, they outcoached us; check, check, check, down the list. If we think we can play like that and be successful then we better change our schedule. Clearly that’s not possible at this date so we just have to coach better and play better.”

Offensive Notes: Maryland totaled 212 yards on the ground against the Hawkeyes. It is the second time Maryland has totaled over 200 yards rushing this season. The Terps ran for 285 against James Madison (Aug. 30) … quarterback C.J. Brown rushed for 99 yards pushing his career total to 1,524. Brown is the 21st Terp to eclipse 1,500 yards rushing … running back Wes Brown rushed for two scores Saturday and has totaled three rushing TDs in the last three games. Brown has five career rushing touchdowns … wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo caught his first passes of the season snagging three for 46 yards.

Defensive Notes: Maryland totaled four sacks for the second consecutive week … the Terps held Iowa to 116 rushing yards, the second-lowest total for the Maryland defense this season. The previous low was 83 against USF (Sept. 6) … linebacker Yannick Ngakoue added one TFL to his season total with his fourth sack and now has 9.5 TFL this season. He entered the weekend leading the conference in tackles for loss … Darius Kilgo and Roman Braglio each added one sack, while Andre Monroe and Keith Bowers had a half a sack. Monroe now has 20 career sacks, four shy of the program record.
