Interesting Terrapin Notes from The Western Regional Victory

Notes and congratulations from Maryland’s Elite Eight Win

We’ve got some individual accolades, some team notes and some odd coincidences from the Spokane Regional
Individuals
1) Congratulations to Brionna Jones who joined the region’s Most Outstanding Player Shatori Walker-Kimbrough on the All-Tournament team.
2) Congratulations to the Terps for overcoming their lowest first half scoring total of the season. The previous low was 27 points at Nebraska on January 3rd.
3) Congratulations to Kristen Confroy. The freshman made what may be the least noticed most important shot of the night – her only shot of the game. After the Terps went the entire first half without making a three point shot – the first time all season they had not made at least one three pointer in a half – and had missed their first attempt of the second half, Confroy drained a long distance shot from the right corner with 16:33 left that not only tied the score at 29 but opened the floodgates for the Terps to make four of their final six.
4) Congratulations to Coach Brenda Frese for not only taking her team to the Final Four as a number one seed for the first time in her tenure (Maryland was a top seed in both 2008 and 2009) but to back to back Final Fours for the first time in program history.
Team
5) Congratulations to Maryland for defeating Tennessee in an NCAA Tournament game for the second consecutive year and improving the Terps to 3-3 in postseason play against the Lady Vols.
6) Congratulations to Maryland for reaching its sixth Final Four in program history – three under Coach Frese and three under Hall of Fame coach Chris Weller.
Oddities
7) The Spokane Regional had an odd connection to Maryland’s 2005-06 National Championship season. The Terps played Gonzaga and won 88-50 at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament. It remains the only time the two programs have met. Maryland also played Tennessee in that same tournament. The Terrapins hung with the Lady Vols before fading late and losing 80-75. Pat Summitt called them a potential Final Four team at that early date. And, oh yes, the Terps also played Duke four times that season.
8) The women’s tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1994. The first time all four number one seeds advanced to the Sweet Sixteen came in 1999. Coincidentally, that was the last time a women’s team went undefeated in the Big Ten. That team, Purdue, also won the National Championship. (They were, though, the top overall seed.)
