Maryland baseball places four on All-Big Ten teams – Todd Carton

The Big Ten announced all-conference and postseason baseball honors Tuesday afternoon. Although Maryland failed to claim any individual awards and placed no one on the All-Freshman team, two Terrapins were named to the first team with one making the second team and one on the third team. Each all-conference team consists of one player for each position (except pitcher) and a designated hitter. Each team also includes three starting pitchers and one relief pitcher.

Mike Shawaryn – First team starting pitcher

Sophomore right handed starter Mike Shawaryn was on of only four unanimously selected players. Shawaryn opened the season with 10 straight wins and might have captured the Pitcher of the Year Award had he not lost two of his final three decisions. Shawaryn finished the regular season (note: All future references to finished refer to the regular season.) 11-2 and led the Big Ten in wins and ranking tied for third nationally. The 11 wins are the most in a single season by a Terps hurler and his 21 wins over not quite two seasons make Shawaryn the all-time career leader in wins with 21.

The Carney’s Point, NJ native finished with 115 strikeouts and a 1.68 earned run average. The latter is third best in the B1G (second among starters) and 20th in the NCAA. His 115 strikeouts lead the conference and tie him for sixth nationally. Shawaryn is also in the top 25 natioinally with 10.74 batters struck out per nine innings pitched.

Brandon Lowe – First team second base

Although he had a mild slump in the middle of the season, Lowe opened the seasonĀ inconceivably (and yes, that word means what I think it means) hot at the plate and ended it in style. Lowe finished as Maryland’s leading hitter with a .352 average good for fifth in the B1G and his .589 slugging percentage was third best in the league.

In fact, the Virginia sophomore was at or near the top in nearly every statistical offensive category. He led the conference in total bases, finished third in on base percentage and bases on balls, tied for third in runs batted in, second in runs scored and hits, fourth in doubles and tied for fifth in home runs.

Jose Cuas – Second team third base

Jose Cuas, a junior from Brooklyn, NY, hasn’t hit for an eye-poppingly high batting average hitting only .258. However, his 11 home runs lead Maryland and are third in the Big Ten. This more than doubles his home run total from 2014 when he finished with five big fly balls. With 51 RBI, he is tied with Lowe for the team lead and the pair are tied for third in the conference. Cuas stands second to Lowe in total bases with 106.

Cuas has also improved dramatically in the field for the Terps making just seven errors in 56 games leading up to the the Big Ten Tournament compared to 13 in the 59 games he played as a sophomore..

Kevin Martir – Third team catcher

Kevin Martir, two in so many things for Maryland starting with his position which is, of course 2 in score book notation. Martir, another junior from Brooklyn, NY, is second on the Terps in batting average, second in hits, and second in doubles.

Martir boosted his numbers a bit when he had a six game stretch late in the season where he had 10 hits in 18 at bats with six runs scored and six RBI. He enters the B1G Tournament batting .327 and his 41 RBI, seven home runs and 103 total bases are all third on the team. Those numbers are good enough to land him a spot on the all-conference third team.
