Terrapin Nation Mourns the Loss of Roy Martine

The Maryland football family was saddened to learn of the passing of Roy Martine, a member of the 1951 Terrapin team that won the Sugar Bowl over Tennessee. Martine, a four-year member of the Maryland football team, was 86.

Born March 12, 1929, Martine grew up in East Orange, New Jersey but lived most of his adult live in Richmond, Virginia.

Before enrolling at Maryland, Martine completed his high school studies as a student-athlete at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia in 1948. A center on the Maryland football team, he was a member of the renowned 1951 Terps squad that triumphed over the University of Tennessee in the 1952 Sugar Bowl game. After college he served in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

Upon entering the workforce, Martine made his career in medical supply business sales; he worked for Johnson & Johnson after the military, work that ultimately took him to Richmond.  He left J&J to pursue an entrepreneurial idea in the healthcare industry creating a company known as MacTavish Industries, Inc.

In 1981, a new business opportunity was presented to him by Carilion Health Systems who called upon him to lead in the creation of yet another Richmond company, Sterile Concepts, Inc. As Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and Board Director, Martine’s leadership helped guide this business that specialized in the pre-packaged, sterilized surgical procedure kits.

On September 1, 1994, Martine took the company public in a successful share offering on the New York Stock Exchange.  He retired when the company was acquired by Maxxim Medical, Inc.

Martine is survived by his wife Kathleen, son James, daughters Peggy and Jackie, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 22nd at Third Church (Presbyterian) in Richmond, Virginia.
