Maryland announces 2015-16 Basketball Schedule

Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon announced the Maryland men’s basketball team’s 2015-16 schedule Thursday. Fans are encouraged to click here for more ticket information.

In addition to a challenging non-conference slate which features matchups with Georgetown, North Carolina and UConn, the Terps will welcome Big Ten foes Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, Penn State and Rutgers to XFINITY Center.

“This is a tremendous schedule featuring outstanding programs on both the non-conference and conference side,” Turgeon said. “In our first year in the Big Ten, each night presented great competition and an exciting atmosphere. We are looking forward to the upcoming season in the Big Ten and playing in front of our passionate fan base at XFINITY Center.”

Maryland opens its second campaign in the Big Ten Conference at home against Penn State (Dec. 30) before traveling to the Chicago-area for a tilt with Northwestern (Jan. 2). After welcoming Rutgers for a home game (Jan. 6), the Terps hit the road for two pivotal conference matchups at Wisconsin (Jan. 9) and at Michigan (Jan. 12). The Badgers advanced to the NCAA title game a year ago.

The Terps return home to the friendly confines of the XFINTIY Center to face Ohio State (Jan. 16) and Northwestern (Jan. 19) before making the trek to East Lansing for a battle with Final Four participant Michigan State (Jan. 23). Maryland went 2-1 against Spartans in the 2014-15 season, winning both regular-season matchups.

Iowa makes its first visit to College Park in program history on Jan. 28 prior to another two-game road swing at Ohio State (Jan. 31) and at Nebraska (Feb. 3). Fans can enjoy the longest homestand in 2016 when the Terps welcome Purdue (Feb. 6), Bowie State (Feb. 9) and Wisconsin (Feb. 13).  The Terps topped then-No. 5 Wisconsin, 59-53, last season in an electrifying contest at the XFINITY Center.

Following a midweek trip to Minnesota (Feb. 18), the Terps will play host to Michigan (Feb. 21).

The Terps wrap up the home slate with a game versus Illinois (March 3) sandwiched by road contests at Purdue (Feb. 21) and at Indiana (March 5 or 6). The Terps went 2-1 against the Hoosiers last season, including a thrilling 68-66 win in early February and a 75-69 quarterfinal victory in the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago in mid-March.

Highlighting Maryland’s non-conference schedule is a home bout with Georgetown on Nov .17.  The Terps welcome the Hoyas to College Park for the first time in 42 years as part of the inaugural Gavitt Games. Maryland leads Georgetown in the all-time series, 36-27. The last time the Terps tangled with the Hoyas in College Park was on Dec. 11, 1973 – a 115-83 Maryland victory. The Terps and the Hoyas played each other every season from 1947 to 1976.

Maryland begins competition with an exhibition on Nov. 6 versus Southern New Hampshire before officially opening the 2015-16 campaign on Nov. 13 at XFINITY Center against Mount Saint Mary’s.

After the highly-anticipated Georgetown matchup, Maryland plays host to Rider on Nov. 20 and Cleveland State on Nov. 28 as part of the Cancun Challenge, bookending its trip to Mexico for challenge play on Nov. 24 and 25 where it will face Illinois State Tuesday and either Rhode Island or TCU Wednesday.

An old rivalry will be renewed Dec. 1 as Maryland makes the trek to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina in the ACC/B1G Challenge. Maryland is tied for the second-most wins all-time in the Challenge, collecting 10 victories since its inception in 1999. Maryland and North Carolina will meet for the 180th time in school history in a series that dates back to 1924.

The Terps return home to face St. Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 4, before heading to the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 8 where they will battle UConn at Madison Square Garden. The Terps fell to then-No. 18 UConn on Nov. 13, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, snapping a two-game winning streak against the Huskies in the series.

After welcoming Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 12, the Terps will head to Baltimore to face Princeton at Royal Farms Arena Dec. 19.

Maryland concludes the month of December with a home contest versus Marshall Dec. 27.

In its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference, Maryland won a school-record 26 regular season games and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terps finished 28-7 (14-4 B1G) and had an unblemished 9-0 home record in conference play.
