Terrapin Field Hockey Wins Season Opener at Temple 4-2

The Maryland field hockey team won at Temple, 4-2, Friday afternoon in its season opener and the first game of the Conference Cup. Freshman Linnea Gonzales led the Terrapins (1-0) with two scores in her Maryland debut.

“This was a very strong opening game for Maryland,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “There were over 700 fans in Philadelphia. Temple was quite resilient, but Maryland’s midfield really dictated with the fitness and the tactics of Alyssa Parker. It’s very exciting to have freshmen Linnea Gonzales and Julie Duncan statistically putting Maryland in the winning category.”

Gonzales scored her first career goal and the first goal of the Terrapins’ season 12 minutes into the match. She drove it in herself and knocked in a clean shot to the right side of the goal.

With about 10 minutes left in the first half, redshirt senior Welma Luus finished off a pass from freshman Julie Duncan from the right side to make it a 2-0 lead. Temple’s Tricia Light scored five minutes before halftime to make it a 2-1 game at the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Gonzales scored her second of the day off a penalty corner set up by Lein Holsboer and Emma Rissinger to make it a two-goal lead for the Terrapins.

Just six minutes later, senior Anna Dessoye scored after a penalty corner off a pass from fellow senior Sarah Sprink to make it 4-1.

The Owls’ Alyssa Delp scored their second goal less than two minutes later.

The Terrapins took 21 shots to the Owls’ seven and had eight penalty corners to five.
