Despite Warrior Like Effort From Perry Hills, Terps Fall to #1 Ohio State 49-28

One of the most unusual feelings I have had watching a Terrapin football game occurred today.

As a 33 point, there was no way I expected a win today. But then came the first 2 series of the the day. 3 and out for OSU and then a wide open TD reception for DJ Moore on an underthrown pass from Perry.

After a few minutes form set in and OSU jumped to a 21-7 lead.

Then the game became surreal. A 75 yard run by Perry and then a TD drive out of the gate in the 2nd half and yes the game was tied.

The rest is history yet a tremendous effort by the Terps remains etched in the mind.

What happens from here remains to be seen, stay tuned.

perhaps the best effort maryland has exhibited since edsall came to college park yet we still lose by 21, hills ran great had some drops but his overall passing is sub par. but great effort and toughness by perry. md was penalized i think 9 times which is really hurts them. tip of the cap to locksley for showing some creativity yesterday though not sure about bringing in cockerille for one play when things were going ok at the time.

during the press conference edsall was asked a ridiculous question from some nit wit from comcast…answered the question and stormed out. that reporter should be banned from future press conferences. (http://www.testudotimes.com/2015/10/10/9494133/watch-randy-edsalls-tense-press-conference-after-marylands-loss-to)

the consultant to the athletic dept who leaked info which caused the firestorm this week should be fired. what a complete jerk making a bad situation completely toxic.

due to the nonsense this week i think it’s almost impossible to keep edsall on the rest of the year. i not sure what advantage there is in having a lame duck coach. but who knows. maybe they’ll let him finish the season out and then move on.

i’m hopeful the school will hire a professional search firm to bring in candidates for coach. i wouldn’t trust anderson again in picking a football coach. md may be a “basketball” school but football is the cash cow in collegiate sports.

it will be interesting to see if the team plays with the same intensity after the bye week.

one thing is for certain it’s not hard to see how much a good coach can mean to a team. look at michigan. yes harbaugh is truly exceptional and there aren’t many guys who can coach em’ up like he can but a good coach could get a lot more out of what we have at md. and get us closer to being where we would like to be in a couple of years.

Well, Freddy, I have a a few thoughts to add. First, it’s sad that I’ve read repeatedly that this was Maryland’s best effort and yet all they could manage with that best effort was a 21 point loss to a team that beat Northern Illinois and Indiana by only a touchdown. This says a lot about where this team is. The other sad bit in my mind is that despite being tied with aOSU midway through the third quarter, I never had the sense that the Terps were going to win.

As for your coaching comment, MD. doesn’t need a Harbaugh to turn things around and do it quickly. In other forums I’ve pointed to three instances in Maryland football history (Roy Lester goes 2-9 in both 1970 and 1971 and Jerry Claiborne improves to 5-5-1 in 1972 and 8-4 in 1973; Terps finish 4-6-1 in Claiborne’s final season then finished 8-4 in the first season under Bobby Ross; and of course, more recently Ralph Friedgen following Ron Vanderlinden.) where a coach immediately improves a program. Then you can have the Edsall effect – 9-4 to 2-10.

I’ll admit to not being a big fan of the decision to hire Edsall from the outset but certainly as a Terps fan wanted him to succeed. Then the debacle of his first season simply turned to resignation because the financial issues of the athletic department and the lack of a buyout clause for the university in Randy Edsall’s initial contract meant that Kevin Anderson essentially welded Maryland’s football fate to Randy Edsall for these 5 years. The on field results have been an utter failure and I think it all falls at the feet of Edsall and his staff.

I’ve seen forums where people have gotten into personality issues, character issues and public relations gaffes. I never have. I don’t know Randy Edsall and have only met him in passing a few times at Terrapin Club events and thus have no real basis to judge him in that way. So when I say that it’s time for Maryland to bite the bullet and let him go is based solely on what’s happened (or hasn’t happened) on the field: 0-12 against ranked teams with only 2 of those losses by fewer than 10 points, 15 losses by 3 touchdowns or more in four years + six games (the same number in all 10 of Ralph Friedgen’s seasons), 4 losses to non P-5 teams and the list could go on.

Based on this, there should be no way that Edsall would return next season so with all the added turmoil of the past few days, I think it’s best to simply thank him for his work, wish him well in the future but cut the cord now.

todd, i’m not suggesting md find a harbaugh like coach. that would be close to impossible. i’m merely saying that a good coach could get a lot more out of the talent the team currently has and that would be some sort of foundation to build on.

there is one proven college coach that could be available soon and that could be chip kelly. his style of play doesn’t work in the nfl and i would think if the eagles let him go he’s back in college. he does have ties to the state of maryland as once upon a time he was the defensive coordinator at johns hopkins. and coaching at oregon gave him a up close look at how a company like nike could impact a program. and funny thing, i think md has a smaller but similar company backing them. underwear or undercoat..something like that

Exactly my point, Freddy. I said MD doesn’t need a Harbaugh to turn things around. Harbaugh’s just the latest example where the right coach makes an immediate positive impact. And of course there were the three instances from Maryland’s past where a coach did just that. I don’t want to dig into my memory but I don’t think Claiborne or Ross came with Harbaugh like credentials and Friedgen had not been a HC. So I think the right guy turns the program around year one.
