Around the Horn

Indiana 47 Terps 28—Please let this season end.  Kudos to Brandon Ross:  Brandon Ross became just the fourth Terrapin to rush for 250 yards or more in a game, but Maryland lost its 2015 home finale to Indiana, 47-28, at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium Saturday afternoon. Ross joins LaMont Jordan (306 yards vs. Virginia, 1999), Bruce Perry (276 yards vs. Wake Forest, 2001) and Josh Allen (257 yards vs. Virginia, 2003) as the only Terps to rush for more than 250 yards in a game. The senior also scored three touchdowns in the game, making him the first player in Maryland history to have at least 250 yards rushing in a game with three or more touchdowns. The Terps are now 2-9 with mercifully only 1 game left.

So if you listened to the Sports Maven this morning, you know I was under the weather and stayed home today. This is what I watched.

I was not impressed with the play calling of Penn State vs Michigan. Harbaugh’s guys won easy.

Trouble in Paradise: Not only did Ohio State lose 17-14 in a very boring game but Cardale Jones and Ezekiel Elliott pledged to leave the program. Urban played way too close to the vest and was thoroughly out schemed by Mark Donofrio.

Florida and Georgia needed overtime to beat 2 teams that should never be on their schedule.

Kendall Briles, although only 33 years old, would be the guy I would like as Maryland’s coach. Brilliant offensive mind as Baylor thrashed Oklahoma State.

Notre Dame a playoff team–not in my mind after watching them squeak by a horrible BC squad 19-16 at Fenway Park.

Wizards beat Detroit by 2 to move to 6-4 and Caps won 7-3 to move to 13-5.

In ROH Wrestling the Moose (300 lbs) defeated a guy half his size in 7 seconds. That was enough of ROH.

Now it’s time to see who retains possession of the axe as THE GAME (Cal-Stanford) is approaching halftime.

Day off from politics.

Good night

    great game by ross.

we can see why cockerille was moved to fullback. but we can’t see why he was moved back to qb. edsall had to be the worst evaluator of talent in the country.

there is zero chance of locksley becoming the full time head coach next year.

being a creative offensive coordinator doesn’t mean one would be a good head coach. you need to show more why briles fits the bill for md’s hc job.

not sure why anyone here would care about penn st or mich play calling. are we playing either school next?

as far as who got the axe. thankfully edsall

So, Freddy, I’m not sure what your question is about Kendal Briles? It seems to me that the natural progression is the arc that Briles has followed – position coach to coordinator to head coach.

Is it possible that MD could lure a head coach from a “group of five” school? Yes. Would I want the Terps to interview and hire Mark Richt if by some act of insanity Georgia fires him? Absolutely. I’m not convinced either of those scenarios is particularly likely.

Making a case for Briles, if you want to argue that he is too young and has only a single year as a coordinator, then that could create some basis for concern. Although I’d point out that he’s been in Baylor’s system for 7 or 8 years and that he served as de facto offensive coordinator whenever Baylor played it’s second unit last year and has made a seamless transition this year.

Briles certainly fits the bill of someone who is likely to play the sort of wide open offense that Kevin Anderson indicated he’d seek when he held the press conference announcing Edsall’s termination.

He certainly would come with solid credentials as a recruiter. He was the Big 12 recruiter of the year in 2013 and 2014. The “drawback” is that he’s never left Texas (as a player or coach) and his recruiting prowess and reputation seems to be limited to Texas and the Big 12 footprint so one could question how he will fare in continuing the #DMV2UMD Movement (if that really exists). On the other hand, I’m not sure that Maryland’s football fortunes would take much of a hit if Briles could lure players from that part of the country to College Park and I think a great recruiter will be a great recruiter wherever he goes.

Anything else you need to at least make a case that Maryland should at least pick up the phone and see if he’d be interested in coming to CP for an interview. Or even that he shouldn’t be hired if he “passes the audition?”

todd all i’m saying is if you want to make a case for someone you need to educate the reader more as to the qualifications of a candidate

todd, also I don’t any reason md shouldn’t look at excellent defensive coodinators for hc as well. nothing says a coach can’t hire an offensive coordinator that plays a wide open style. honestly, give me someone who plays a pro offense that has some kind of balance between running and passing.

Freddy, I really do care who the A.D. gets to coach the terps, I will always support the team. I hope the new coack keeps Locksley because he is a good recruiter, more importantly, he has a good recruiting class coming in.

I have no objection to MD hiring a DC. I’d love the Terps to talk with Kirby Smart or even talk to Don Brown to see if he’d be interested in coming back to MD.

At the very least, I hope you feel educated about Kendal Briles.

todd I was quite aware of briles and have been for acouple of months when I started looking into who I might like to see md get and hearing about the top assistants and up in coming coaches that might be available.

my suggestion for additional info was to bruce because many who read this don’t know much if anything about the different candidates and just mentioning a name and saying I like this guy is short changing readers. and I believe that in the website or on the radio if you support a view back up it with solid points to make your case.

in other words (working in a little gary Williams) don’t just say the orioles should resign chris davis because you like him, you might, if you support that idea say power hitters are at a premium and davis is one of the top 3-4 power hitters in the game, who also knocked in 119 runs, led the team in walks, had an on base percentage quite a few percentage points above the league average. he protects other hitters in the line up changing the way a pitcher approaches the line up. he plays excellent defense which helps out the other infielders and plays he makes could help the starter pitch an extra inning because balls dug out of the dirt become an out rather than an error so the pitcher can avoid pitching to another hitter that inning saving several pitches. he can also play a serviceable right field and even pitch an inning or two in a long extra inning game. and the fact that he’s only been a regular for 4 years could mean he hasn’t reached his peak as a hitter.

My coder is trying to convince me to move to .net
from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on a variety of websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform.

I have heard fantastic things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it?
Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!
