Observations of the 4-0 Terrapins

Most of the last 7 NCAA CHAMPS–2 excellent guards–Sulaimon and Melo fill up that role–Melo finished with 7 assists

Damonte Dodd was stellar in his 20 minutes last night, 5-5 from the field, 3 blocks

Diamond and Ceko were invisible .

Layman’s game was off last night , though he did hit the trey to put the game out of reach at 73-64

Rober Carter Jr finished with 11 points.

Rasheed Sulaimon scored 18 points and Melo Trimble added 15 to help the No. 2 Maryland men’s basketball team beat Illinois State 77-66 on Tuesday night in the Cancun Challenge.

With the game tied at 62, back-to-back 3-pointers by Jared Nickens and Sulaimon gave the Terrapins (4-0) a six-point cushion with 3:45 left.

The Redbirds (2-3) tried to rally, but a strong Maryland defensive showing forced 17 ISU turnovers on the night.

The Terps are now outscoring opponents 59-30 in the final five minutes of games this season, an average of plus-7.25 per game.

Damonte Dodd registered a career-high in points with 13, including 12 in the second half. Trimble added seven assists as five Terrapins recorded double-digit scoring, including Jake Layman (12) and Robert Carter (11).

“This was the best we’ve played – especially defensively,” head coach Mark Turgeon said. “Damonte was great tonight. I am proud of my team because we played an Illinois State team that was really great tonight.”

Maryland will face Rhode Island for the Riviera Division title on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network. Illinois State plays TCU in the consolation game.

melo did a much much better job getting others involved. best play of the night was when sully penetrated, passes to melo in the far left corner who quickly made the extra pass for the 3.

13 turnovers and 12 assists. not good.

md 30 rebounds. il st 29. not good.

dodd did well. found open spaces down low, good hands-made his shots.

not sure what kind of offense md runs and i don’t think they know as well.

still waiting for layman to play a good game from start to finish. been hyped since he was a freshman. i know the nba scouts like him a lot but never plays a solid or exceptional game from start to finish

    still undefeated.

monday’s first pick in the draft…ben simmonns of lsu dropped out of the draft last night- 4 pts and fouled out with 10 min to go. but that’s just one game. if you watched him previously he is going to be special. just a bad off night
