It was never a game. Quick analysis:
Rasheed –17 points 6-7 shooting plus he completely shut down leading scorer Four McGlynn holding him to 1-7 from the field
Melo—7-7 shooting –4 assists –3 steals–only 2 turnovers
Carter–6-9 shooting–9 rebounds–3 blocks 1 steal
Great effort by Terps on back to back days
Turgeon really had the guys ready.
16 assists but 18 turnovers. Rhode Island was no match for the Terps
Terps now 5-0—Next game Saturday night at 7:30 vs Cleveland State
Jerk of the Game—Rhode Island Coach Dan Hurley who seemingly got into a verbal battle with several of the Terp players. Hurley was upset that Turge called a substitution timeout with less then 2 minutes left. If he was mad at Turgeon so be it but Hurley should have been mad at himself for his horrendous game plan. Needless to say Turgeon seemed furious and rightly so. No more road pay days for Rhode Island at Maryland—guaranteed. From the Washington Post reporter Roman Stubbs:
A tournament official said after the game that Hurley directed an expletive at Maryland’s players in the postgame handshake line. Later, before the awards ceremony, the teams had to be separated at half court.
But, by that point, Turgeon and his team had delivered their statement.
“However people want to talk about us, we really don’t care,” Turgeon said. “What we do care about is that we’re getting better.”

calling a timeout with 90 seconds to go was bush league. have a player give a foul if you want to stop the clock. the game was never in doubt and md led by over 20 most of the second half. the kids on the bench should have been in the game with 3-4 min left not 90 seconds.
md shot really really well and it was a nice change having them get off to a great start.
turnovers outnumbered assists. not good.
only plus 5 in rebounding against a much smaller team. that needs to improve

Freddy–Did you watch the game? Turgeon called a timeout for a 4 man substitution–a 30 second. Very Common. The refs allowed both teams to go to the bench– a mistake. Far from bush league.
What Hurley did was disgraceful–cursing at Maryland players—should receive a reprimand from the NCAA and RIU. Turgeon out-coached him to smithereens.

bruce no one with class or common sense calls a timeout with 90 sec left up by 20-30. that’s ridiculous. in a very high % of the time the subs come in during dead ball situations as in after a foul. you never try to extend the game up by 20 using a timeout. absurd turgeon waited that long to sub

You’re still insinuating that coach hurley was provoked into saying insulting comments to the maryland players.Chris Knoche said he could not repeat the words on the air.If turgeon and hurley want to go at over the proper etiquette on how not to humiliate an overwhelmed opponent , let them do it…don’t involve the players.

I haven’t insinuated anything about hurley. if hurley acted unprofessionally which has been reported he is wrong. and he should know better. his dad coached for yrs at I think st, Anthony’s in n.j, a very very successful h s b ball program. I would have no problem if he shook hands with turge without breaking stride and even if he said something to turge like weak move calling the time and I won’t forget. but if hurley cursed at md players or didn’t shake their hand he is in the wrong.
but make no mistake about it turgeon was completely wrong calling a time out under the circumstances. if he wanted to guys in the game he should have had someone give a foul or step out of bounds with the ball causing a dead ball situation where the clock is stopped. and I don’t think you could find any coach, any play by play announcer, any analyst or any sports writer agree with what turgeon did. it was unsportsman like.
