SWK Leads Terps to 89-53 Squashing of Penn State

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 25 points to help No. 5 Maryland rout Penn State 89-53 on Wednesday night.

Brionna Jones scored 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Terrapins, who won their sixth straight game.

Unbeaten on the road so far this season, Maryland (18-2, 7-1 Big Ten) looked right at home inside Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center. The Terrapins made 8 of 13 field goals to open a 21-12 first-quarter lead. Most of those makes rolled off the fingertips of Walker-Kimbrough who found her shot immediately. She had 12 points in the first quarter and 17 in the first half. Walker-Kimbrough made five of her first six shots for 12 first-quarter points.

Maryland led 39-24 at halftime but not before a Penn State surge that saw the Nittany Lions tie the game early in the second quarter. Four Penn State players combined to lead a 9-0 run to pull to a 21-21 tie four minutes in. But the Terrapins took the lead for good on a pair of Brianna Fraser free throws moments later. Fraser’s makes sparked Maryland after a sluggish second-quarter start and the Terrapins took control with an 18-3 run.

People tell me they don’t like women’s basketball and I have the impression this is largely because the women’s game lacks the soaring athleticism of the men’s game. I’d suggest than if you like basketball as a sport, you should take some time to watch the game.

In particular, I’d urge you to watch Brionna Jones. If you can’t appreciate her fundamental post play whether it’s her footwork, her ability to get position to rebound, the way she caves out space and makes herself available for entry passes or any other aspect of traditional post play, then I’d suggest you don’t fully appreciate the sport.

One other note, Jones was absurdly efficient in last night’s game. Her 17 points and 12 rebounds came in just 19 minutes of playing time.
