Post Game Quotes From Purdue Head Coach Matt Painter
Purdue Head Coach Matt Painter
On Maryland’s effort to get the ball inside:
I thought they did a great job of getting the ball to the basket whether it is post-ups or drives
and that is what you have to be able to do. If you rely on your outside shooting, you’re going to
get stuck a little bit and I thought they did a good job of driving the basketball and a good job
getting it inside. They really clamped down
defensively and we had a couple ill-advised
possessions. You have to give them credit bec
ause they’re a very good defensive team and
they showed that at the end of the game.”
On Purdue decision-making throughout the game:
“Well the decision-making was all about timing of them. We had some poor decisions at the end
of the game and it was just a couple plays, but that’s enough to get beat. Those plays get
magnified when you go down the stretch. You have to get a good shot, you have to make a
good decision, and you have to get the ball insi
de. We have to have a healthy balance. You
need to be able to make perimeter shots and have post ups and when you don’t and they call
your bluff and back off the shooters, it makes it harder to feed the post.”
On Robert Carter performance:
“He is streaky. He goes 4-for-4 (from 3) against Ohio State and that was a game that they won
by 35 points. In this type of game where we are up at halftime, if he doesn’t play the way he
does in the first half, now we have an 8-to-10 point lead. It is a big difference going into the
second half, but his versatility is tough because he can put the ball on the floor and make a
shot. He can also dribble down into the post and knock down threes. The one in the second half
was the biggest one for him.”
On guarding Melo Trimble:
“He’s a good player, just because he may not shoot well from the field, he is smart. He gets to
the free throw line, he gets other people involved. He is a good player. They have a great point
guard and they have a great center. That is not to discount anyone else on their team, but you
throw the athleticism and the length with them, they have all the pieces.”
