Since you threw me a challenge, Bruce, Maryland finished tied for 4th with Wisconsin in rebounding margin in the Big Ten for all games. Michigan State, Purdue & Indiana were the teams in front of MD. But let’s look at how the Terps fared against their conference foes.

In conference only games, Md finished 4th at +1.6 with the same three teams ahead of them (MSU and Purdue both +10.1 and IU at +6.9. The Terps’ 652 rebounds put them in sixth place while Maryland let their opponents grab a total of 624 rebounds putting the Terps 8th in the conference. (Purdue led the conference giving opponents only 515 rebounds in conference games.)

Looking only at offensive rebounds, Maryland averaged 9.6 per game tying them with Penn State and ahead of only Wisconsin, Rutgers, Michigan and Illinois.

In the more important metric of offensive rebound percentage, Maryland was at 29.4% slightly below the national average of 29.8% and slightly higher than the conference average of 28.9% even with the conference number being depressed by Illinois’ absurdly low 18.8%. Maryland 29.4 percent was seventh best in the conference.

I’ll let you judge whether or not these are poor, satisfactory, or acceptable numbers for a team that started a front line of Stone, Carter and Layman and could bring in players the size of Dodd and Cekovsky off the bench.
