Caps host Flyers tonight

All the hype and all the hope that this season would be the “one” seems to be slipping away a bit earlier than usual.  Sure the Caps have the best record in the league.  Sprinkle in a hall of famer or two (Ovie and Backstrom) , plus a few young gun superstars (Kuznetsov and Burakovsky), one of the best goalie records in history and this should be the year.

But over the past few games, it seems to be all for naught.  Absolutely devastating overtime loses to long-time foes, the Islanders and Penguins has Caps fans looking for the exits. And the playoffs have not even started.

Watching the Capitals and hoping that maybe you could win the Stanley Cup matches up well with my radio partner Bruce’s chase of the Lacrosse National Championship for the Terps.  It always seems just out of reach.  Granted that the Terps have gotten much closer than the Caps, who have only made one Stanley Cup appearance in 1998.  That is a lot of futility for a franchise that started 1974.

So about last night, the Penguins looked ready to play from the faceoff.  The Caps looked like the season already ended.  Quick goals in each of the first two periods doomed the Capitals to a 2-0 and then 3-0 deficit.  For 40 minutes of ice time, the Pens appeared to be much faster than the Capitals.
