Terps men’s LAX can clinch a SHARE of the B1G Championship with a win against aOSU. They will clinch the title outright only if Rutgers loses to Penn State Friday (possible) and Hopkins loses at Michigan Saturday (unlikely). The possibility of a three way tie still exists if Rutgers beats Penn State then beats Ohio State and Hopkins beats MD in the last game of the year. All three teams would then finish 4-1.
Folks need to break away from the ACC mindset about Conference Championships where the tournament winner is declared the conference champ and the winner of the regular season has to qualify its title with the adjective “regular season champion”.
In the B1G, the conference champion in the following sports is the team that finishes first at the end of conference play: Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Ice Hockey, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Baseball. Excepting volleyball where there is no postseason tournament, the conference tournament in the other sports on this list determines only the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament and that team is declared the Tournament Champion.
Finally, we should also note that Maryland’s women’s lacrosse team can also clinch a share of the conference championship with a win at Michigan Saturday.
