Terps Defeat Penn State 16-9 And Will Face Rutgers For The BIG 10 Title

The top-seed Maryland men’s lacrosse team opened with six straight goals and never looked back as it defeated 4-seed Penn State, 16-9, in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals Thursday evening at Homewood Field. The win marked the Terrapins’ 12th consecutive victory, matching the program record set by the 1987 team.

The Terps (13-2) will face Rutgers who defeated Hopkins 14-12 semifinal in the Big Ten Tournament Finals Saturday evening at 6 pm on ESPN2.

Sophomore Connor Kelly scored a career-high four goals and Matt Rambo added three goals and two assists, while Kyle Bernlohr made 12 saves in net for the Terrapins. The Terrapins opened the game with four goals in less than eight minutes. Kelly put home a rebound off his own shot for the Terps’ first goal, followed by a Rambo score. Pat Young then put the Terps ahead 3-0 after weaving through the Nittany Lion defense and beating the PSU keeper. Rambo scored again to give Maryland a 4-0 lead after Bernlohr made a save and found Bryce Young darting down the field for the outlet. B. Young fed Rambo, who pulled a spin move before scoring the goal. Then it was Rambo’s turn to display his ability to distribute, passing to Colin Heacock and then Dylan Maltz for consecutive goals to give Maryland a 6-0 advantage

The Nittany Lions came within three goals of the Terrapin lead, 10-7, scoring four straight goals spanning the halftime break. The run was quickly quelled by a Maryland run, however, as it closed the third quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 14-7 advantage. The Terps added two more goals in the final frame to close the game, 16-9.

Greg Danseglio finished with five ground balls for Maryland, while Heacock had a hat trick and P. Young posted two goals and an assist.

I was very (pleasantly) surprised at Maryland’s fast start. It has felt to me as though in their recent games they’ve probed opposing defenses early before honing in on the weak spots and exploiting them for rather prodigious scoring runs. Last night, they simply jumped on Penn State early and never really let up. They retained their composure when PSU made a pair of runs to twice draw withing three goals and had a response each time.

It was great to see Tillman make extensive use of his roster – a tactic that should serve the Terps well with the short turn around to Sunday’s game.

I’m still a little wary with regard to what’s happening at the faceoff dot. Bonaparte got a little dinged up last night (coincidence that both times MD played PSU this season their faceoff man suffered an injury?) and Henningsen certainly looked rusty. MD was minus five on faceoffs which is certainly a better performance than they had against JHU last week but giving up those extra possessions puts a lot of pressure not only on Bernlohr and the defense but also on the offense to have productive possessions. Substantial faceoff deficits are not particularly conducive to deep tournament runs and especially NCAA titles.

Bernlohr was spectacularly good last night especially in the few crucial moments. #FeeltheBernlohr.
