Caps can’t overcome a slow start

By Wayne Viener

Another Washington Capitals season ends short of the conference finals.  The 11th year of the Ovechkin era ends in disappointment.

The headlines are enough for me.  I have watched too much hockey for too many years to go into the details of the game. Of the season, in which the Caps had the best record in the league.  Of another playoff run to nowhere.

I don’t want to dwell on it.  The Capitals played their bet hockey earlier in the season.  The Penguins played poorly at the outset and are great now.

In this series, the Penguins were better than the Capitals.  Faster for certain.  The Capitals had some defensive trouble and, as always, could not get the goal when it mattered most.

Yes it was a great 3rd period for Washington.  Jay Beagle made the best play ever in Caps history flying across the goal mouth to block a shot.  It seemed that it was our time.  And then…

All that is left is the feeling that it is never our turn.

The window of opportunity is still open.  This team needs to get a little faster.  Both Pittsburgh and Tampa are faster. They meet in the conference finals.  Once in my lifetime, I would like to have the Caps win the Stanley Cup.

No matter how well the regular season goes, all that matters is what happens in the playoffs.

Having been a season ticketholder when the Caps joined the NHL, fans are used used to a post season collapse every year, sort of like Cubs fans.
