Terps Welcome Justin Jackson

Head coach Mark Turgeon and the University of Maryland men’s basketball program has announced the addition of Justin Jackson (East York, Ontario, Canada) to the Terps’ 2016 signing class.

“Justin has played at the highest level of high school and grassroots basketball and is prepared to make an immediate contribution to our program,” Turgeon said. “He is a versatile player who is a skilled scorer, good passer and has the ability to create mismatches on the offensive end. Defensively, Justin can guard multiple positions and overall has a great feel for the game. He comes from a great family and we’ve enjoyed getting to know them. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Justin and his family to the Maryland basketball program.”

A four-star recruit, Jackson brings size, skill and versatility to the Terrapin roster and has seen success at positions one through four. Jackson boasts a 7-3 wingspan and is known as a fluid player with the ability to create shots, rebound, and push the ball in transition.

The 6-foot-7 forward played high school basketball at Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.), averaging 14.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game as a junior. He spent his senior season at Hill Academy in Ontario, where he was named a First Team All-Star in the Ontario Scholastics Basketball Association in 2016.  Jackson was also a member of the Team Canada U19 team that finished fifth at the 2015 FIBA World Championships in Greece.

Jackson played AAU ball for UA Elite 24 and Canada Elite and recently competed for the World Select Team at the Nike Hoops Summit. Jackson helped lead Canada Elite team to the UA Associations Championship.

Jackson joins previous signees Anthony Cowan, Kevin Huerter and Micah Thomas as well as graduate transfer L.G. Gill as newcomers on next year’s roster.

On his overall game:

“I am a very versatile player and I am excited to be a part of a very good team. I feel as if I fit in and can play the wing position.  I can score from all three levels.  I can defend multiple positions – one through four.  But most importantly, I feel that I make the right play – whether it is the correct pass or make a big bucket for the team.”

On Coach Turgeon and the coaching staff:

“It is a very caring group – with Coach Turgeon. That meant a great deal to me. They were always checking up on me – asking how I was doing in school and basketball. They kept me integrated and made me feel a part of the family.”

“Justin and his family really liked the coaching staff. Maryland was a first-class university and program. They have a tremendous academic staff, training staff and an impressive strength and conditioning program. The basketball program has proven to be very successful.”

On the University of Maryland and the coaching staff:

The University of Maryland is a first-class institution. Justin, his family and I really loved and connected with the coaching staff. Coach Turgeon really understood how versatile Justin was on the basketball court. He expressed that Justin would be an important piece of the puzzle.  Coach Turgeon shared how he would place Justin in situations as freshman to make the important decision on the court and the made quite the impression on the family.”
