Taylor Cummings Career at Maryland Ends as Carolina Regains NCAA Title With 13-7 Win Over Maryland

The attempt at an undefeated season comes crashing to a halt. But Carolina earned the title, outplayed Maryland and deserved the title. The goalie for NC, Megan Ward made 14 saves many on free position shots.  It usually takes a hot goalie to stop a great team and that’s what happened.

But to me the story was that today marked the end of the collegiate career of the Greatest Female Lacrosse Player of all time,Taylor Cummings. During her career at Maryland Taylor’s teams went 87-4 including 2 National Titles. Taylor did everything at excellence. Watching her play was a privilege that Terrapin nation will not forget. Her leadership, sportswoman type play, ability to rise to the occasion will long be remembered. Here is a list of some of her awards. Hopefully, 2016 Tewaaraton Trophy winner will be added to her collection on Thursday.

This is an iteration of a comment I posted elsewhere:

    1. Ward set the tone early making the save on Whittle’s FP thirty seconds in.

    2. The Terps had multiple opportunities to have a first half lead – 3 man up and 5 FPs. They came out of that with goal. That’s too many lost opportunities when the opponent is of UNC’s quality. It’s even worse when the opponent is playing well.

    3. I don’t think Cummings was a hundred percent Sunday. She exited the game for several minutes in the second period and sat on the bench with towel over her head. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that from her. Though Sammie Jo Tracy gave Cummings trouble in the past, Reese making the switch to Stukenberg on the draw in the second half is another indication that something wasn’t exactly right with Cummings.

    4. The intent of number three isn’t to be read as an excuse. UNC won this game with superior play and hustle. Full credit to them. This is simply an observation and it might not be accurate.

    5. I’ve written repeatedly recently about the capriciousness of a one and done tourney. In lacrosse, hot goalie or face off player can turn the game around. This is what happened Sunday.

    6. Please contrast the way MD finished Sunday’s game with the way Syracuse finished Friday’s. Yes, MD played aggressively and committed more fouls than one usually sees from a Terps team but it was miles removed from the repeated unnecessarily rough shots that the Orange took at the Terps.

    7. This was a disappointing end to a wonderful season and two spectacular careers because we shouldn’t let comments on this game pass without also acknowledging the career of the great lice Mercer.

Thanks again to Coach Reese, the players and the entire MD lacrosse family for the exemplary way they represent the University of Maryland and, by extension, all of us.
