Chris Davis is the most unproductive hitter in baseball. His hustle & defense is great but $16 million dollars a year. You have to be kidding. I would have paid Davis no more than seven million a year. But more importantly we could have retained Chen with the extra nine million.

If they had let Davis go and kept Chen they may have been able to finish a couple of games above .500 to hopefully secure 3rd place in the division. Instead we’re stuck with a team that is 17 games over .500 and in first place. Now we may have playoff baseball to watch in October rather than sticking to regular season hockey…
Davis is 2nd on the team in RBI and HR and 4th in WAR. His 2.1 WAR is 2nd among AL first basemen to only Miguel Cabrera (2.2) and well ahead of 3rd best Hanley Ramirez (1.2). Chen is 5-4 with a 4.99 ERA 0.6 and is currently on the DL with an elbow injury, he’s basically Gallardo. Would I rather have Chen than Jimenez for the money? Of course but would I rather have Davis or Chen + $10MM? I’d take Davis anyday.
