“The King is Dead” Arnold Palmer, the most beloved golfer of all times passes away at age 87

I only got to see Arnold Palmer live one time. it was at a charity exhibition match at Pine Ridge w Jack Nicklaus in the early 1960’s. I remember very little of the round except it was extremely good natured fun. Could it be that Carol Mann might have played a few holes with them? The General of Arnie’s Army has passes “Long Live The King”

In 2006, at the Constellation Energy Classic at Hayfields Country Club , Hunt Valley, MD, I had the most incredible experience of having Arnie put his arm around my shoulder and walk with me for about 20-25 yards between holes while thanking “me” for supporting him and professional golf. He was 77 at that time and it was a very humid day and you see that he was tired and fragile. But he still had that indomitable spirit. This experience was one of the greatest moments of my life and stands right behind getting married and having children and grandchildren.

We have all lost a great ambassador for golf and more importantly a role model for all of us. He made each person feel special and he treated each person with respect and courtesy. In that short period of time I was with him, he made me feel as though I was his friend. A newspaper reporter came running up to me after seeing Arnie with his arm on my shoulder and asked me whether I was his friend and what did he say to me. All I could reply was…”he thanked me?”

It’s hard to find heroes these days and we just lost a great one.
