Maryland men’s basketball head coach Mark Turgeon and Hall of Fame head coach Gary Williams participated in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation’s sixth annual College Basketball Tip-off luncheon and fundraiser Wednesday. Numerous former and current college basketball coaches joined the panel, where coaches discussed and shared stories on their experiences, past successes, as well as their teams’ upcoming season during the two-hour program.

Coach Turgeon spoke on the panel about his excitement for the upcoming men’s basketball season, which begins for Maryland on Nov. 5 at 2:00 with an exhibition against Catawba College at the Xfinity Center.

“This is the best time of year,” said Turgeon. “You have six weeks to have some great practices and really work with your team. We have made some great strides. I’m excited about this team and I think our fans will really enjoy watching them play.”

The panel, which included Turgeon and Williams, was moderated by University of Maryland alumnus and current SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt. The other coaches in the panel included Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright, Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III, and former Bucknell Head Coach Pat Flannery. National Baseball Hall of Famer and host Cal Ripken, Jr. welcomed the capacity crowd and shared insight about this important initiative.

All proceeds from the luncheon benefited the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation’s programming and initiatives for at-risk youth across the United States. The Ripken Foundation aims to help foster character and teach life lessons to disadvantaged youth in America’s most distressed communities through baseball and softball themed programs. The goal is to build 50 youth development parks in five years for underserved communities across the country.
