Junior linebackers Jermaine Carter, Jr. and Shane Cockerille were named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten, the league announced on Tuesday night. The duo earned the recognition based on votes from media members that cover the conference.
Carter, who has been named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten for the second straight year, ranks second on the team and sixth in the Big Ten with 103 tackles. He also ranks second on the team and 14th in the conference with 5.0 sacks. Carter has posted 7.0 tackles for loss, three pass break-ups, two forced fumbles, an interception and a fumble recovery in 2016. The junior ended the regular season last Saturday with perhaps his best game of the year, posting a career-high 15 tackles, a pair of sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a win over Rutgers.
Carter has started all 12 games for the Terps in consecutive years, registering over 100 tackles in each of those seasons. Cockerille, who transitioned to linebacker during the spring, led the Terps and ranked third in the Big Ten with 108 tackles. He totaled at least seven tackles in nine of his last 10 games. Cockerille made a career-high 15 tackles in the Terps win over Michigan State and posted a career-best two sacks in the game at No. 19 Nebraska.
The league also announced William Likely III as Maryland’s sportsmanship award honoree on Tuesday.
