In front of a program record attendance and led by a six-point performance from sophomore Jen Giles, the No. 2 Maryland women’s lacrosse team (3-0) beat No. 1 North Carolina (3-1), 13-10, Saturday.

“We knew going into this game that it’d be a test for us since we are a young team,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “These guys did a great job and came out fighting hard and hustling all over the place. It was nice to see. We came out strong on offense, our defense made some great stops. It was nice to see everything come together today.”

Giles led the Terps with three goals and three assists while senior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg had a hat trick. Senior attacker Caroline Wannen had two goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Kali Hartshorn and junior attacker Megan Whittle each scored twice.

Sophomore goalie Megan Taylor posted nine saves while adding three ground balls and one caused turnover.

After a two hour delay due to inclement weather, the Terps took Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium for the first time in 10 years in front of 3,868 fans.

Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in under four minutes with goals from Hartshorn, junior Taylor Hensh and Whittle’s 150th career goal. After UNC got on the board, Giles and Stukenberg added tallies as the Terps led 5-1 at 21:01.

The teams traded goals for the rest of the half as Hartshorn, Whittle and Giles scored again. Maryland took an 8-5 lead into halftime.
