Upstart Oregon Upsets Terps in Sweet Sixteen 77-63

Senior Brionna Jones became the Maryland single-season scoring record holder but the third-seeded Terps fell to tenth-seeded Oregon, 77-63, in the Sweet Sixteen Saturday.

Jones finished with 16 points against the Ducks and 697 points this season, passing Vicky Bullet’s former record of 686 from 1989.

Senior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough also had 16 points while sophomore Brianna Fraser had 10 points. Jones led the game with 15 rebounds.

Oregon led by nine points at halftime and made seven straight shots late in the third quarter to extend that to 59-45.

A steal and basket by Walker-Kimbrough cut the lead to 69-63 with just over three minutes left, capping an 8-0 Maryland run. But Sabrina Ionescu answered with a basket for the Ducks and the Terps were called for an offense foul on the other end, ending the threat.

This marked Maryland’s 25th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terrapins are 44-24 (.647) all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 32-12 (.727) under head coach Brenda Frese. She’s led the Terrapins to eight Sweet Sixteens, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 NCAA title.
