Bernhardt Simply Fantastic as Maryland Opens BIG 10 Schedule with a 15-7 Win

from umterps.com

The No. 9 Maryland men’s lacrosse team scored a season-best seven first quarter goals and never looked back as it defeated No. 19 Michigan, 15-7, to open Big Ten Conference play at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.

Four Terrapins logged four points in the game, including freshman Jared Bernhardt, junior Connor Kelly and senior Dylan Maltz, who each had hat tricks. Junior Dan Morris made 12 saves in net, while Matt Neufeldt caused two turnovers and had five ground balls.

Seniors Colin Heacock and Maltz opened the game with a pair of goals less than three minutes to the game. Michigan scored two to equalize, but the Terrapins answered with a massive 5-0 run over 4:14 of action from five different goal scorers.

Bernhardt was among the goal scorers in the run for Maryland (6-2, 1-0 B1G), extending his point streak to eight consecutive games to open his career. The mark surpassed Matt Rambo’s streak of seven straight games in 2013.

Maryland’s defense was stout, holding Michigan (8-2, 0-1 B1G) to a 15-minute scoring drought in the second half. The Wolverines had the first goal of the second half, but the Terps strung together a devastating 4-0 run to open a 13-5 advantage it would never relinquish.

Rambo extended his consecutive point streak to 47 straight games, while Maltz ran his team-best goal-scoring streak to 11 games. The victory marked Maryland’s sixth straight win in Big Ten action, including a 10-1 mark overall.

Maryland continues Big Ten play next weekend when it hosts Penn State at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium at 1 p.m.
