Former Terps star Will Likely is finally off the board. The New England Patriots signed Likely on June 5th, 38 days after the NFL draft ended. He was on the Jets minicamp squad but left without on a contract after camp had ended. Likely was considered a late round prospect for the most of his career at Maryland, but unfortunately, he tore his ACL in 31-10 week six loss to Minnesota during his senior season, dooming his chances at being drafted. Likely was an explosive player at Maryland whose biggest impact was in the return game, among his accomplishments is the Big Ten record for most punt return yards in a single game (9/5/2015, 233 yards vs Richmond).
Due to his small size (5’7) it’s rather hard to see him making as a defensive back in the NFL. However, the Patriots have a widely known reputation for finding unique talents, such as wide receiver Chris Hogan and turning them into deadly offensive weapons. Likely fits that mold well, the Patriots could find a use for him as a return specialist or as a wingback in special situations. We at Terptalk wish him the best in his, now official, NFL career.
