Maryland Basketball Catch-up

A post by Jordan

Hey everybody, longtime no see. Thankfully Intern Mason was working on the football articles over the weekend, so we have that covered. It was a busy weekend for basketball, I would have been posting non-stop, but due to the site-issues I am compressing all of the would be small articles into one round-up.

Damonte Dodd works out for 76ers- Former Terp senior center Damonte Dodd had his first NBA workout on Friday for the Philadelphia 76ers. Dodd was a good rim protector and rebounder for the Terps, but not many people thought he would be an NBA prospect. In all actuality, the Sixers will likely not draft Dodd, despite the fact they have 3 2nd round picks. However, they could sign him to a summer league contract and see if he makes the D-League.

Melo Trimble works out for the Hornets- Melo continues his pre-draft workouts with the Charlotte Hornets.  The Hornets, like the Wizards, are in desperate need of cheap depth at the point guard position. They will be looking into several options, both in the draft, and through free agency. The Hornets only have one second round pick at 41. In a class this deep they can likely find a much stronger player at 41 than Melo Trimble. If Melo does goes undrafted then the Hornets may be on the list of teams that will want his services in the summer league.

Recruiting Update- The NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) camp went on over the weekend at the University of Virginia. Several top 2018 recruits were in attendance, including several Terp targets. Jalen Smith In an interview with Scout, the composite 5 star said Maryland is one of his top targets (naming them first when asked). When asked what he liked about Maryland he said, “The main thing I like is how coach Turgeon coaches at a fast tempo and he brings everyone back together when they start to disband, and also how they have my teammate from high school [Daryll Morsel] there with them.” Jalen “Sticks” Smith has long been considered a Terp lean. It seems the top rival to get him is Villanova. Villanova also has a teammate of Smiths, wing Brandon Slater.

Several top 100 recruit Maryland targets had updates at the camp:

  • Devon Dotson- ranked number 38 in the country by Scout, named Maryland in top 7 along with Kansas, Florida, Arizona, Wake Forest, Ohio State, and Miami
  • Simi Shittu-ranked 15th in the country by Scout, announced his top ten: NC State,Notre DameDukeVanderbiltConnecticutMarylandNorth CarolinaOregonMichigan and Syracuse.
  • Keldon Johnson- ranked 22nd in the country by Scout
  • Louis King- ranked 12th in the country by Scout, when asked what schools he felt were prioritizing him listed Seton Hall, Oregon, Syracuse, NC State, Kansas, Kentucky, and of course Maryland
  • Jermaine Harris- ranked 62nd in the country by Scout, the rising senior from Upper Marlboro. The schools that he feels he has built relationships with he said- Maryland, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Georgia, Miami. When asked about Maryland he said- “Actually the coach the was recruiting me to Georgetown he [Kevin Broadus] ended up at Maryland, so now he’s been recruiting me from Maryland.”
