Former Maryland men’s lacrosse head coach Dave Cottle has been selected for enshrinement into the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2017.
Cottle, who is currently the General Manager for the Chesapeake Bayhawks, is joined in the induction class by Avery Blake, Sr. (Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania), Tom Hayes (Drexel University, Rutgers University), Sid Jamieson (Bucknell University), Jack Kaley (New York Institute of Technology), Dick Szlasa (United States Naval Academy, Washington and Lee, Towson University), and Morris Touchstone (United States Military Academy, Yale University).
Cottle is the third former Maryland head coach to be named to the IMLCA Hall of Fame, joining Clayton “Bud” Beardmore and Dick Edell. The ceremony will take place on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. To purchase tickets, visit www.IMLCACoaches.com.
Cottle coached for nine seasons at the University of Maryland from 2002-10, compiling a record of 99-45. His 99 victories rank third in history among Terrapin coaches behind Dick Edell and the coaching duo of Jack Faber & Al Heagy.
Cottle led the Terps to eight consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, seven NCAA Quarterfinal appearances and three NCAA semifinal appearances. He also captured back-to-back ACC Championships in 2004 and 2005.
Prior to Maryland, Cottle spent 19 seasons as the head coach at Loyola College where he led the Greyhounds to 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Cottle came to Loyola in 1982 after leading Severn School to a 26-9 record and consecutive Maryland Scholastic Association championships. Prior to his success at Severn, Cottle served for two years as a graduate assistant coach, assistant varsity lacrosse coach and physical education instructor at his alma mater, Salisbury State University.
One of the finest players in Salisbury State history, Cottle was enshrined into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. During his career he re-wrote the NCAA record book, while earning All-America honors three times. He still ranks among the top three in goals (179), assists (123) and points (302) in Seagull history. In 1975 Cottle led the nation in scoring and was just the second player in collegiate lacrosse history to score more than 100 points in a single season. Following his senior season in 1977, he served as captain of the South team in the North-South All-Star Game.
Cottle received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1978 from Salisbury.
