A Look at Tonight’s Maryland UCLA’s Match

A post by Mason Viener

In an interview, this week Maryland Men’s soccer coach Sasho Cirovski (link on bottom of page) said “The first Friday of the academic year is also known as one of the best nights in college soccer.” Friday night all eyes of the college soccer world will be on Ludwig field where the 6th ranked Maryland Terrapins take on #15 UCLA. In front of what is expected to be a record crowd.

UCLA comes in at 1-0 with their win coming against San Francisco 5-3 in which the Burins surrendered three second half goals. UCLA showed their offensive power scoring five goals lead by Brian Lloski who earned all Pac-12 honors last year and continued his success last Saturday scoring twice. Questions for UCLA’s backline are evident after the 2nd half appearance against San Francisco they will have to stop one of the best players in the country with Gordon Wild (we talked with Gordon Link on the bottom of page).

Last season these two met at the StubHub Center, (now home of the Los Angeles Chargers) the two tied 1-1 UCLA both teams scored their lone goals in the first 5 minutes. Maryland had the offensive upper hand, but never cashed in the winning goal.

What Maryland needs to do:

The Terps need to keep up the success that the defense found vs. Hofstra.  Both team’s backlines are considered their weaknesses and the Terps also have a unexperienced goal keeper in Dayne St. Clair.

Maryland can’t let UCLA offensive get out and run. As in any sport ball control is very important whomever has the ball in the attacking third the most will come out on top.

A Tip

It should be a night to remember at Ludwig – if I was looking for something to do tonight in the DMV this would be it.  .If you plan on making the trip out to Ludwig tonight, get there as early as possible to make sure you get in.  These games often sell out right around kick off, this should a record crowd and might be the best fan experience in all of Maryland sports.
