#15 Terps Hold on to a 60-59 Win over the Hoos

The 15th-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team overcame a late deficit to win at Virginia, 60-59, Wednesday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at John Paul Jones Arena.

A layup by sophomore Kaila Charles with 40 seconds to play gave the Terrapins (6-2) the lead for good. With the victory, the Terps won their fourth straight game and are 10-1 all-time in the Challenge.

Sophomore Stephanie Jones led Maryland with 13 points and seven boards. Charles added 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Kristen Confroy scored 12 and fifth-year senior Ieshia Small chipped in 10.

“I thought Virginia played really inspired, hungry and was really tough tonight,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “We’re a young team and you’re seeing us growing up game by game, possession by possession. Tough game overall for us in terms of how we like to play, but fortunately for us, Steph Jones showed up for us tonight. I thought she was huge with her presence, her toughness, her tenacity. Games like this on the road in a hostile environment will just make us better.”
