Tonight I saw something special. I went to the final Os game. I got there in the 6th inning and we were losing 2-3. The crowd was mostly obnoxious Red Sox fans. There was a long rain delay in the seventh. During it, on the big scoreboard/screen they showed Tampa come back from an 0-7 game to tie the Yankees at 7-7 in the ninth. When we resumed play and got to the ninth the Tampa/NY game was in the 12th inning. With two outs and two strikes the Os got a double. Then another double to tie and then Andino’s winning hit. Within 180 seconds after winning the big scoreboard showed Longoria hitting a home run for Tampa to beat the Yankees and more importantly sending the Red Sox to vacation. It was so awesome to watch all the Red Sox fans that had been yelling so hard going home quietly. It was truly a remarkable scene.

This comes as no surprise to me. Red Sox nation would never put up with this disastrous collapse. Second guessing is running wild throughout New England. Francona has to go –no chance of extending this failure. The sweetest night in baseball history has just taken a new victim. The Orioles stood tall, fought like warriors, WE ARE BACK!!!!! Every Oriole fans can feel it. Change is in the wind.

Article from the Boston Herald:

Don’t be surprised if Terry Francona managed his last game with the Red Sox [team stats].

The 2011 season was particularly trying on the two-time World Series-winner, who yesterday looked and sounded like a man in need of a break.

Management might not mind a fresh start, either, particularly after a 7-20 September that included the worst collapse in baseball history and showed cracks in Francona’s hold on a clubhouse that grew increasingly selfish. From pitchers drinking beer during games on their off days to Francona calling a team meeting after a 14-0 victory to address negativity and a lack of cohesion, perhaps both sides would benefit from a change after eight oft-outstanding seasons.

Francona looked weary at yesterday’s farewell press conference, and was noncommittal when asked if he needed time to sort out whether he’d return. “(GM) Theo (Epstein) and I talked today a little bit, and I think we’ll continue to talk tomorrow,” Francona said. “Maybe it’s best today to stay with where we’re at. It’s still pretty fresh and pretty raw. It’s a fair question. I just would rather focus on the other stuff today, if that’s OK. It’s a fair question.”

Yes it was the perfect storm. Of course the best part of it was that yes the Orioles played a major role in the dismantling of the Red Sox. what made it special was the timing of the endings and the improbabilities of the comebacks. Papelbon looked unhittable striking out AJ and Reynolds. But then the roof caved in on a team that has humiliated the O’s over the past decade. Let’s go back to July 8 when Francona found it in his mind to rub salt in the wounds of the O’s. The Red Sox were up 10-3 in the 8th based on a 8-0 lead in the first. David Ortiz swings for the fences at a 3-0 pitched then stares at his fly out and barely runs to first. Yea as usual the Red Sox were trying to show up the O’s . Heaven forbid you throw inside to a Bosox player.Kevin Gregg was incensed –screamed at Big Papi and the brawl started. Catch the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCPnKpJP_hQ

“I think you show them that we’re not backing down. We’re not scared of them — them and their $180 million payroll,” said Gregg, who angered Ortiz with back-to-back inside pitches. “We don’t care. We’re here to play the game. We have just as much right to play the game here and we’re going to do everything we can to win.”

Well the Orioles didn’t forget and the bitterness ensued. The final result–the O’s take 5 of 7 and utterly ruin the Red Sox season. Nice work Francona. You have just presided over the biggest meltdown in baseball history.
