Last year when NC State rifled the Champs Sports Bowl away from a more deserving Terrapin squad, I kept my mouth shut not trying to provoke the obvious. when Coach Tom O’Brien ridiculed the Maryland faithful, I could take it no longer. Maryland soundly thrashed the Wolfpack yet behind the scenes deals and manipulations probably cost the Terps the game and eventually Ralph his job. That is what I dislike about the ACC —it is a Carolina situation. Now I know why Debbie refused to listen when the Big Ten came calling. She probably knew she was leaving and understood how crucial Maryland is to the conference. Could the directive have been as follows from Commisioner Swofford. Convince the faithful the ACC is the only way to go. I am not buyimng. Just one more ACC blemish. By the way Coach Edsall, you might want to put a little asterisk next to the Nov 26 date at NC State.

The thought that Gary would go on a phone calling spree to disrupt the NC State hiring process is so laughable. Everyone in the country knew of the friction betweem Gary and Debbie. This was no secret. What idiotic applicant would call Gary too get his opinion on someone he disliked. Why did Debbie go there? Why in front of new coach did she make it abundantly clear he wasn’t the first choice. Wolfpack back to the glory days. I doubt it.

Some observations on a pathetic Championship game:

–The Big Guy Alex Oriakhi was the difference tonight 11 points, 11 rebounds 4 blocks and he just totally frustrated Matt Howard.

–I thought Shelvin Mack should have been given the ball way before the game was hopelessly over.

–As I predicted the team with the best player, Kemba Walker would win as usually happens.

–I wonder how many illegal phone calls and texts Calhoun’s staff made to Jeremy Lamb.

–The game seemed like a typical Big East slugfest with the toughest team winding up on top.

–It seemed to me that about 75 students made the trek from Storrs.

–Kemba Walker completed one of the great tourney runs in NCAA history and will be rewarded with a top 15 NBA pick for his efforts.

–Currently Jordan Williams is #25 in the First round. Matt Howard from Butler isn’t listed at all in either round. Kyle Singler is listed at #30-the last pick in the first round.

–Maybe I was too harsh by using the word pathetic. I remember being in Atlanta when the Terps won the title. I thought the game was close, exciting and overall great. That was until everyone started attacking the Hoosiers afterward. I guess it depends on who you are rooting for.

Coach Al Mcquire when asked by his broadcasting partner Dick Enberg What is it that he would miss the most about coaching sarcastically responded: ” I will miss telling 16 and 17 year old young men that their attending my school is the most important thing in my life!!!” Al was one of a kind and maybe one of the great strategists in the game. He always told it the way it was. When another guard on Marquette claimed that he was as good as Al’s son Allie and wanted equal PT, Al reponded”in a battle of equals my son wins the argument every time. Al also admitted he ruined Allie’s career by being his head coach. Check out Al dancing from a Youtube moment:

I had the pleasure of being in the company of ex Terrapin great Steve Hood from Dematha High on Tuesday. Some of the things we discussed:

—Steve was recruited by and thought the world of Lefty. When Lefty left before his freshman year, he decided to stay at Maryland with the new head coach Bob Wade. Had he left, he would have had to give up a year of eligibilty.

—Steve left Maryland after his sophomore year joining the Lefthander at James Madison. Steve starred for 2 years leadingto a 2nd round draft selection in the NBA by Minnesota. He evetually spent 7 years overseas in Spain.

—After coaching several years at Good Council, Steve has opened up his own insurance business in Phoenix!

—When asked who the best coach he ever played for he replied—Morgan Wooten.

—Best NBA player—easy—Kobe Bryant,

—LeBron to Miami—weak move—Kobe would never do it

—Steve played the first year of the 3 point shot and excelled at it over his career.

—Chose Maryland over BC (Gary Williams), Mich State (Jud Heathcote), and Clemson

—Steve’s a great guy and I am sure he will be a success at his new venture. Look for him to be a guest on Terp Talk in the near future.
