#8 Lady Terps Struggle But Survive Road Test at Georgia Tech—64-56

With 9 minutes 30 seconds left in the first half, Maryland trailed 9-6. That about describes the first 11 minutes. Brenda gave an impassioned timeout lecture just telling the players to fight through the pressure. Alyssa Thomas and Tianna Hawkins responded with 2 superb efforts each finishing with 23 points. Do the math thats 46 out of the 64.

Full court pressure can really wear you down and Georgia Tech stayed in the press the entire game. But maryland overcame the press and won in impressive style befitting its #8 ranking. The Terps are now 7-3 in the conference and 20-3 overall. ext up is Clemson on the road Thursday night.

Terps Roll Past Wake 86-58 Behind Hawkins’ 24 Rebounds

Tianna Hawkins had already taken a seat on the bench, happy to savor a solid victory by Maryland (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP).Then, with just over two minutes left in what would be an 86-58 rout of Wake Forest on Thursday night, word got to coach Brenda Frese that Hawkins was one rebound short of setting the school record. Hawkins was thrust back into the game, snared her 24th rebound on the Maryland end with 32 seconds left, and wore a huge smile right up to the final buzzer.

Coach Frese On the upcoming Duke game:

“We felt like we needed to get our energy back. Hopefully now we can play a 40 minute game now. That is what we strive for. It is going to take a lot more work than what we did tonight, going on the road and into Cameron Indoor Stadium. It is a lot of fun coaching this team. They know what is at stake. They know what it’s like to go into Cameron and will be fully prepared. I want the team to come out and play for 40 minutes. When we come out and play like we did in the second half we are a special team. That’s what we are going to have to have to go down there and win.”

#5 Lady Terps Coast to 78-50 Win over George Mason

Alyssa Thomas had 18 points to lead four players in double figures and the fifth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team beat George Mason 78-50 on Sunday. Laurin Mincy scored 15 points for her seventh straight game in double figures. Lynetta Kizer had 14 and Anjale Barrett added 13 for the Terrapins (11-0).

“This is a big team win for us, especially defensively,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “Any time you can go on the road and hold a really good George Mason team to 24 percent shooting, I thought we did tremendous job just mixing it up defensively.”

Laurin Mincy–sophomore runs the point and doesn’t back away from key possessions

Anjale Barrett-provides senior stability at the guard position

Tianna Hawkins–16 reboundsno weakness to her game

Lynetta Kizer–still not starting but definitely finishing–one of the best players in the country —has not hit full stride yet

Alyssa Thomas and Tianna Hawkins both had double-doubles, and No. 10 Maryland shut down 11th-ranked Georgetown, 72-53 Sunday at the Comcast Center.

“We’re just extremely proud for our team and excited for them,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “This work started in our offseason. This is why these girls are so much fun to coach. When you talk about how hungry they stayed in the offseason, to prepare themselves for this season.”

“Obviously, this was a terrific team win, the balance that we had, the defense we displayed. We played a very talented team. I think that for Georgetown’s quest they’re now the seeing the flip side of it, in terms of playing with expectations and how you have to play with a target on your back.”

Lady Terps Add 6th Ranked 2012 Recruiting Class

The Maryland women’s basketball team welcomes three stellar players to its family for the 2012-13 season, head coach Brenda Freseannounced Friday. Malina Howard, Chloe Pavlech and Tierney Pfirman make up the No. 6 recruiting class in the country, as ranked by ESPN.com’s Hoop Gurlz.

“We believe we’ve added three really outstanding people to our program with this class. Our supporters can be very proud they’ll be representing Maryland. They’re each terrific players, outstanding students, fun personalities and receive outstanding support from the people around them. We’re happy to add all those folks into our program.”

Howard and Pfirman are both ranked in ESPN.com’s top 25 of 2012 players. All three received scout grades of 91 or better. Howard comes in as the No. 1 post player in the class and is ranked No. 6 overall. Pfirman is the No. 5 forward and No. 22 overall athlete in 2012. The class as a whole is ranked No. 10 by Blue Star Basketball.

Brenda Reaches out To Congress on a Crucial Issue

Head coach Brenda Freserecently reached out to Rep. Elijah Cummings about an important issue surrounding cancer patients and her son, Tyler, who is fighting leukemia.

During Tyler’s treatment, Frese learned that many patients cannot get vital medicines because drug companies do not return a big enough profit on them.

She wrote a letter to Rep. Cummings, hoping someone would be able to make the pharmaceutical companies change their ways. Cummings and his staff launched an investigation that was released today. from umterps.com

#15 Lady Terps Defeat Carolina 88-65 Behind Dbl Dbl From Alyssa Thomas

Maryland’s young basketball team appears to have finally grown up. Alyssa Thomas had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the 15th-ranked Terrapins had four other players score in double figures Sunday in an 88-65 victory over No. 10 North Carolina. It was Thomas’ fourth double in her first five ACC games. Coach Brenda Frese knew it would take a while for a team with six freshmen and not a single senior to play at its best. Judging by Maryland’s performance against the Tar Heels, that time is now. “You could see our confidence this game at an all-time high,” Frese said. “You’re starting to see a team coming together. … This is a great opportunity for us to gain momentum with what we’re doing.” Diandra Tchatchouang scored 13, Lynetta Kizer and Alicia DeVaughn each had 12, and Laurin Mincy added 10 points for the Terrapins (16-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Some interesting stat lines: Terps shot 92% from the line Terps outrebounded Carolina 55-32 The Terps still had 28 turnovers. When they can get the turnovers under control, the sky is the limit for this Terrapin team.
