A key figure for Maryland’s next football season could be quarterback Danny O’Brien. Will he stay at the school?

Here is what I know:

*The quarterback has not made any pronouncements about leaving or staying. I know that Randy Edsall has spoken with O’Brien, who has not complained to the coach about the program in general or the offensive system in particular. Maryland had new offensive and defensive coordinators this season. O’Brien, the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year in 2010, had a difficult season that ended when he broke his left arm in the season’s 10th game against Notre Dame. The system — with its run options — required an an adjustment by O’Brien, who seems suited to pro-style. But remember that O’Brien completed 31 of 44 passes for 348 yards in the season opener. So he’s plenty capable.

“Danny’s plan is to focus on getting his arm healthy and on spring ball at the University of Maryland,” Matt O’Brien, the quarterback’s father, told me.

There has been speculation that O’Brien, a redshirt sophomore in football, could graduate in the spring. That would allow him to play at another FBS school without sitting out a year. But I hear his early graduation is not a sure thing.

*I think there is a certain momentum keeping O’Brien at Maryland, at least for now . He could leave, certainly. But he seems to like the area. I hear he did well during his marketing internship last summer at Under Armour. He’s a kid who likes to make situations work, even the tough ones. Remember that he was among the first prominent players to say that he was staying at Maryland when former coach Ralph Friedgen was dismissed after last season.

MY COMMENTS DIRECTLY TO DANNY

Danny there are certain facts about you and University of Maryland:

1) Your Freshman year here was sensational.

2) Your opening game against the U was superb.

3) Whether it was the system, the receiver suspensions, the enormous amount of dropped passes, or just mistakes it seemed like there was one or two key plays a game that disrupted your progression. However, there is probably nary a college quarterback who at some point during his career never had an off game or year. You are only a sophomore and you have 2 years of eligibility left. The most significant part of your college football career is in front of you . There is no where in this country where you could ever be more admired or respected then at College Park.

4) As your Dad said above the only things you should worry about now is proper healing and preparation for spring football.

5) The ACC is not the NFL North. Things can change overnight. Clemson who we had on the ropes and got killed by NC State is playing for the title next week.

6) My only hope is that Terrapin football makes a quick recovery and Danny O’Brien is at the helm!!!!

One Day I’ll Learn—Waiting For My Voice To Return

10 times in the past 10 years I have lost my voice. It usually is related to watching a game I care about at home where I can’t embarass myself by screaming. Last Sunday I was screaming at the USA defense or lack thereof in the World Cup Final. Fotunately Dino and Freddy will help me get through the Thursday show. By Saturday I should be back to 100%.
