The fiery Aussie, Sarah Mollison. has stepped for the Terps in the absence of Terrapin superstar Karrie Ellen Johnson.  Katie Schwarmann is the fastest player in the game. Dipper has been awesome in the nets. Laura Merrifield game in game out for 2 years is the model of consistency. I will have more to say after the game Sunday. Here is the recap of the game:

A tenacious defensive effort quelled a normally potent Blue Devil attack Friday as top-seeded Maryland topped No. 5 Duke, 14-8, in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship. Fueled by the energy from Maryland’s stingy defensive showing, senior Sarah Mollison and sophomore Katie Schwarzmann propelled the offense with four goals apiece. Senior Laura Merrifield added a hat trick. Maryland (21-1) got the better end of a low-scoring affair in the first half, taking a 5-2 lead into halftime. The Terps bested their rival in nearly every category, including a 5-3 advantage in the integral draw control. The Terps await the winner of Duke and Florida for the semifinal game at Stony Brook Friday night. Total domination by the Terps!!!! It’s a final 15-6.

I feared this could happen as the margin og victories has been shrinking since the loss of Karri Ekllen Johnson from the  lineup. Perhaps the loss was a wake up call for the team. Sometimes the pressure of an undefeated season can wear you down. The team will only be remembered for winning a NCAA title. In the long run perhaps the timing of the loss could prove benficial.

Confidence was still  overflowing. Coach Cathy Reese’s message to the team “Start having fun” The 2nd half was a different game. Led by Laura Merrifield’s 5 goals, the Terps outscored NC 9-1. It was never a contest. The Terps refused to sit on the lead, instead they imposed their will on the shell shocked Heels. In addition to Merrifield, senior Katie Gallagher, junior Brittany Dipper,  Sarah Mollison and Katie Schwarzmann were all tabbed to the all-tournament team. It is Dipper’s third straight appearance on the team. After missing last season due to a battle with Crohn’s Disease, Gallagher led the Terrapin defense with a game-high three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Despite a slow start, Karri Ellen Johnson ended the match with three scores to move past Allison Comito for fourth all-time in career goals at Maryland with 177. Katie Schwarzmann, Brandi Jones, Beth Glaros and Sarah Mollison all netted two.

Mollison served as captain last year as a junior, helping lead Maryland to its first national championship since 2001. The attacker was third on the team last season with 45 goals. Gallagher missed last season with an illness but is poised to lead the Terrapin defense in 2011.Merrifield has been a steady force in the midfield for Maryland since her arrival. As one of the tallest players in the country, she brings an imposing stature to the Terps’ offensive scheme and also boasts the speed to allow Maryland to run its fast-paced style of play.
