The 23-year-old had weight problems and questions about his work ethic and dedication earlier in his career, but those issues are gone. He rebounded strong from a 2008 knee injury to hit .295 with 20 homers, 35 doubles, a .376 on-base percentage and a .516 slugging percentage at Double-A last year. A switch-hitter, Bell had a massive platoon split last year, slugging 367 points lower against lefties (.259, versus .626 against right-handers), and some scouts think Bell is eventually going to have to ditch batting from the right side of the plate. Before his call-up, he was slugging 132 points lower against lefties at Triple-A this year as well (.356 vs. .488) in a small sample size.

Since the day George was traded the bullpen has been in shambles. Jim Johnson possibly overthrew himself into major elbow problems. Gonzo ruined the early part of the season and set the tone for this team the rest of the year. Simon is not the answer. Uehara is not the answer. At this point I am not sure Sherrill is the answer. The Orioles took a part of the team that had no problems and traded it for a AA prospect. Can you imagine 15 years ago if the Yankees traded Rivera for a Double A prospect.

Sherrill has been relegated to middle relief for the Dodgers. It seems like they would probably love to ship him back East. But then again I forgot, anyone can be a closer!!!

This guy is a pure winner. However, the Mercenaries are just too deep. There is not even close to a soft spot in the lineup. Over the course of a long series most pitching staffs succumb to the might of the Yanks. Furthermore Arod seems to have finally settled into being comfortable with the team. perhaps it was getting the burden of steroid use out of the closet and into the open.

Philadelphia is an easy choice–Cliff and Cole and pray for rain. Wait a minute, Pedro is lying in the grass as well. Just too much pitching. The only intangible here is Joe Torre. I wonder what is up his sleeve. The Dodgers just don’t have the starting pitching but they do have our stopper, George Sherrill. Let’s see if Manny can put the team on his back without Big Popi around.

Losing Sherrill would not have changed anything significantly for the Orioles. Last place with him or without him. However MacPhail is doing a great job despite the w-l record. The foundation is being set for a much better season next year and a contending team in probably 2 to 2 1/2 years from now. Outstanding young outfield, good double play combo, terrific young catcher, several quality young arms in the rotation. promising prospect at 3rd base, Josh Bell, picked up in the Sherrill trade. Need to trade for power hitting first baseman, need a dh, could use a proven starter, bullpen still needs work and they need a manager who knows how to win and gets the most out of his players. But look at the present team and compare it to the team of 2-3 years ago. Big Big difference.

I am to assume that a Single A closer is worth forfeiting the remainder of the season because by jettisoning Aubrey Huff the chances of the O’s winning 22 of their remaing games and winding up with 70 wins is very remote. Why does this matter you might ask? Season ticket holders pay the same price for games in August and September that they pay in May and June. The only difference the message the Oriole brass is sending out is who cares about the folks who attend games. I for one am sick of hopeless games in September played before empty houses. It sickens me that this is the path again. Do you think I care about Detroit winning a pennant with our talent. When does this end?

Believe in MacPhail. I will go with it but my patience is wearing thin. I am beginning to think it is unfair to dump Trembley. He keeps taking bullets for MacPhail and never publicly complains. Another sad day in Oriole history.
