Down by 2-0 with 5 minutes to go, and being thoroughly dominated by the Tar Heels, the Terps staged an incredible comeback tying the game on a penalty corner with no time left in regulation and the winning in OT on a goal by Jill Witmer. Much more later on.

Terrapin Field Hockey Squad Advances to Championship Defeating ODU 4-0

ARE YOU KiDDING ME!!!!!!! Missy Meharg devised a strategy to totally shut down then offensive juggernaut from ODU.
I was there at College Park when the 2 English Players thoroughly dismantled Maryland. But not today. This band of warriors reversed the tables and now on Sunday at high noon for the 3rd year in a row will play the Tar Heels for the National Championship.

The fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (18-4) shut out No. 2 Old Dominion (22-3), 4-0, Friday night in the NCAA Semifinals in Louisville, Ky. With the win, the Terps advance to their fourth straight NCAA title game.

The Terrapins used different defensive techniques and a total team effort to stop the Monarchs.

“We’re so proud of the team,” head coach Missy Meharg said after the win. “Over the last three days, we needed to have a very different tactic to play Old Dominion’s very stretched midfield. We have worked on that since Wednesday. The players were so disciplined in doing what we asked. We knew it was a huge gamble. Old Dominion’s an incredible team and we’re just so proud of Maryland.”

Colleen Gulick put the Terrapins on the board with her second goal of the season in the 15th minute. Jemma Buckley cracked a shot off of a penalty corner and Gulick tipped in the rebound off the save to give Maryland a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Megan Frazer dribbled into the top of the circle and drilled in a shot from the top right corner for the second Terrapins’ goal. Maryland would take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Harriet Tibble and Buckley both scored within 71 seconds to push the Terps’ lead to 4-0. Tibble sent in a hard shot off of a corner inserted by Katie Gerzabek in the 57th minute. Tibble stopped on the play and then cracked the shot.

A little over a minute later, Jill Witmer found Buckley in front of the goal to send in the fourth Terrapins goal with just under 12 minutes left to play.

Missy Meharg named National Field Hockey Coach of the Year

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association has announced that Missy Meharg, head coach of the National Champion Maryland field hockey program, is its Division I Coach of the Year for an unprecedented eighth time. Meharg, a graduate of the University of Delaware and the Tatnall School, led the Terrapins to their seventh National Championship in 2010, going 23-1 on the year. Maryland also claimed its ninth and third straight ACC Tournament title as part of a season-ending 15-game winning streak. Coming into the 2010 season, the Terps lost seven of 11 starters from a 23-1 NCAA runner-up team in 2009.

“This honor is a tribute to an amazing staff,” Meharg said. “With Tjerk being here for four ACC titles and four NCAA championships, having Dina Rizzo back as an alum and an Olympian, as well as having Barb Weinberg who is an Olympian as well, it is a really high-level staff that I know the players so heavily benefitted from. This is a team award and it’s a real honor.”

Set the record straight–The National Title is back where it belongs. The greatest US Field Hockey player ever, Katie O’Donnell has ended her career thw way a true champion should–with a National title.. The Terps dominated the 2 OT periods but could not find the nets until Megan Frazier finally was able to get the ball past the Carolina goalie. Missy Meharg again was her usual humble self, post game displaying the class of one of the best coaches in the land. Hats off to the Terps—Kevin Anderson’s first National Title as AD.

The top-seeded Maryland field hockey team (21-1) rallied to beat No. 5 Connecticut 3-1 Sunday to advance to the NCAA Semifinals, which will be played in College Park next Friday. The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead, but senior Katie O’Donnell dished three assists to give the Terrapins the win. ”Connecticut is a really strong team. We want to credit them for some great coaching, and some really athletic play. Their goaltender was very sharp, but to the Maryland team, incredible vigilance and conviction and a great response at halftime,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “We have made it to College Park, and that has been one of our goals all season.”
