Casey Townsend Drafted 5th By LA Based Chivas USA

Casey Townsend became the eighth Terrapin to be drafted with a top five pick in the MLS SuperDraft Thursday. The senior forward was selected fifth overall by Chivas USA.

Townsend was named an NSCAA Second Team All-American and a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist this season while garnering first team All-ACC honors for the second straight year. The Traverse City, Mich., product racked up 17 goals as a captain for the Terps.

Townsend, a four-year starter, is tied for third on Maryland’s all-time scoring list with 43 goals and is also tied for sixth in Maryland single-season scoring with 17 in 2011.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Casey today,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “After being such a workhorse for our program the last four years, we can’t wait to see Casey flourish as he takes the next step in his professional career. I am positive I speak for all of Terrapin Nation when I say we wish Casey nothing but the absolute best in the MLS.”

John Stertzer Scores in OT as #2 Terps Stuggle to Defeat Rutgers in OR 2-1

The Classic Trap game—Sandwiched between last Friday’s game against #2 Creighton and this Friday’s game against arch rival UVA, the Terps just were not up to their usual aggressiveness as they barely got past a 4-4 Rutgers team.

Tonight the Terrapin wore Pink jerseys as UA sponsored a night to join the fight against Breast Cancer.

Early in the 2nd half goalie Will Swaim stopped a barrage of shots any of which would have giver the Rutgers the lead. Funny thing this game was that Rutgers had one of their players tossed and had to play a man down for much of the 2nd half. However they went into a prevent mode giving up virtually any chance of scoring.

What a great night at the Legends Museum!!! I was host at 8PM to a panel comprised of much of the Coaching hierarchy at the University of Maryland, as well as many of the leading players. I want to thank Museum Director Mike Gibbons for giving me the honor of hosting this event. Randy Edsall, Cathy Reese, Erik Bakich, Sasho Cirovski, and Assistant Field Hockey Coach Tjerk Van Herwaarden manned the stage with me. Some of the players present were Football’s Kenny Tate and Danny O’Brien–from Women’s Lax – Katie Gallagher, Karrie Ellen Johnson, Brandi Jones—Field Hockey’s Alicia Muralski and Janessa Pope —Soccer’s Alex Lee and Casey Townsend and Asst Lax Coaches Brian Reese, Quinn Carney, and Lauri Kenis.
Randy Edsall admitted that we were talking with Randy Shannon but there was no inking of the contract yet. Also, it looks like there is a possibility our first game of the year will be Labor Day night at home vs The U.

DC United Signs Sophomore Ethan White

Maryland defender Ethan White has signed to play professionally with Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, becoming the squad’s fourth Homegrown player, the club announced Tuesday morning. White, a sophomore, progressed from United’s Academy to Maryland, where he led the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Quarterfinal appearances and a 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference title. The Kensington, Md., product helped Maryland equal its program-best mark for shutouts in a season (15) and was tabbed a second team All-ACC selection for his efforts.”It’s always been a dream for Ethan to play professionally and for D.C. #2 Men’s Soccer Falls To Michigan in 2nd OT 3-2

This was a heartbreaker. A packed house showed up at Ludwig Field to hopefully watch the Terrapins vault into another College Cup nexyt week in Santa Barbara. But it was not to be. The Terps squandered scoring chance after scoring chance in the first overtime and were beaten on a passive 4 foot shot by the Big Ten Champs. Casey Townsend played a miraculous game scored 1 of the goals with his running mate Jason Herrick getting the other. Sasho was extremely disappointed after the game:

“This is probably the most gut-wrenching, heartbreaking loss at Ludwig in my career but yet I’m extremely proud of the effort our team put forward,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought that we played a very good first half and were very unlucky to not get more than one goal. Michigan gained some momentum with that early goal in the second half and yet we were still very composed and really felt like we were going to come back and win this game. ”Our guys rebounded with the championship fiber that is a part of our program. We did everything but put the ball in the back of the net. I love this team. We’ve had an unbelievable season. It’s really hard to believe we are not going to Santa Barbara.”

Despite the loss, hats off to Sasho and his ACC Champs for a tremendous season. I guess I will have to eat a little humble pie from Karl Pick. Oh well!

Terps Battle Michigan Saturday for Position in the College Cup

No. 2 seed Maryland hopes to punch its ticket to the College Cup when it plays host to Michigan Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. Taylor Kemp’s first career goal secured Maryland’s helped defeat Penn State and secure the Terps’ quarterfinal bid last Sunday. The sophomore defender, who was named to both College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week, also quelled Corey Hertzog, holding the nation’s top scorer to only one shot, and guided Maryland to its 15th shutout this season and fourth in a row.

Field Hockey and Men’s Soccer will have To Defeat ACC Rivals in the NCAAs

Three of the final 4 teams in the final four of Field Hockey are members of the ACC. Maryland plays Ohio State in the semis and the winner faces the winner of UVA and Carolina on Sunday at high noon. It’s Redemption weekend for the Lady Terps, as one way or another Katie O’Donnell arguably one of the best American Field hockey players ever!!!—will play her last game for Maryland.

On the Men’s Soccer NCAA draw–Sasho’s guys will face the winner of Bucknell and Penn in the round of 32 on Sunday at 5PM. Both teams recently were victorious in the ACC Tournament.

Men’s Soccer Wins ACC Title Defeating North Carolina 1-0

A Matt Kassel penalty kick goal followed by a tremendous defensive effort provided Maryland with its fourth league tournament title Sunday, as the Terps dropped North Carolina, 1-0, in the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. Maryland (17-2-1) goalkeeper Zac MacMath was named the ACC Championship Most Valuable Player after tallying six saves to preserve the Terps’ 13th shutout this season. Kassel, Casey Townsend and Jason Herrick were also tabbed to the all-tournament team.

Terrapin Weekend Update

Field Hockey–The #2 Lady Terps won twicw this weekend 7-5 at Old Dominion on Friday and 7-2 at home against Delaware on Sunday. Katie O’Donnell’s 2 goals on Sunday allowed her to pass Nicole Muracco as Maryland’s leading goal scorer in history.

#4 Men’s Soccer defeated Clemson 3-2 on Saturday night as Senior Jason Herrick headed home the game-winner at 75:32 off a perfectly served ball from Matt Kassel in the deep central midfield. Midfielders Sunny Jane and Paul Torres also notched goals as Maryland moved to 8-2-1 and 4-1-1 in the ACC this season. “Herrick had a tremendous game,” head coach Sasho Cirvoski said. “His class and leadership really came through with that gritty game-winning score.”

#4 Lady’s soccer defeated Clemson Friday night 4-0 as jasmyne Spencer scored twice.

Terps win their first ACC match – Maryland 3 NC State 1

The Maryland men’s soccer team notched their first ACC win of the season Saturday at home against NC State. Jason Herrick scored the first and third goals, while Casey Townsend added the second goal. Maryland and Zac MacMath would have had a shut-out were it not for a slip-up between Paul Torress and MacMath which led to an empty net shot on goal for the Pack’s Chris Zuerner.

Freshman Patrick Mullins tallied the first two assists of his career. Mullins has come on strong the past two games. He scored his first goal against Loyola earlier in the week and caused another one by firing a shot that resulted in an own goal. Watching him develop this season is going to be extremely exciting and I’d be shocked if he was not a major impact play by the end of the season (not that he hasn’t been during the past two games).
